He also declared he was on the up and up in surrounding himself with former army and marine corps officers. But he complained that a retired Colonel on his pay roll was “sneaky" in giving the subcommittee evidence about him. Several subcommittee members accused Lev of vasibn. and Sen. Bander charged him with- “Levity." But Lev, who can't read or write and has trouble speaking English, said he didn’t mean to "invade” any questions. Subcommittee chairman John L. McClellan (D-Ark.) told newsmen: "I don’t think he’s giving us all the information he possesses. There are a lot of things more he’ll be called on to explain.” His income taxes are one item calling for further information, McClellan said. Detroit — An average motorist in the U. S. in 1929 used 550 gallons of gasoline, while an average motorist today uses 700 gallons of fuel and as an average drives more than 30 percent farther per gallon.
