■ Nf' Don’t lose faith in humanity •ven if you have heard things about you that are untrue. Remember there are 165,000,000 in thia country and most of them have never heard of you. 0 ©t— Stanley Bowers, state tai commisaioner of Ohio reports the loss of half a million dollars in tax receipts on cigarettes. They still collected over >16,000,000 at two cents per package and contribute the loss to the tact that kingaise “cigs” have become so popular, rather than the fear of lung cancer. 0 o Mayor David A. Parrish of Madisonville, Ky., a city of 12,500 has announced the city doesn’t require the taxes on properties and poll taxes this year and he has abolished them. He says the revenues from the water plant and the power distribution will easily take care of all needs of the city. It is certainly refreshing to hear of a unit where they think of giving tax relief. 1 —- 0 0 Klenk’s Decatur baseball team is again in the scrap for high honors in the Federation league, northeastern Indiana’s top semiprofessional teams. Ferd Klenk, Decatur merchant and long-time sponsor of baseball and basket--ball teams in Decatur, has gathered together another high class team, worthy of the support of all baseball fans of this area. A small charge is made for admission to the games, but you'll be assurred of much more than your money’s worth at each game. The home games are played at Worthman field. —__io oi—nr. dTiaudn MaSßasaniaao sw editor of the Fort Wayne Journal-Ga-zette from 1917 to 1923 and who at that time published the most interesting column we can remember, “Cabbages and Kings’* will return to that city October 13 to deliver an address on “Jefferson and Civil Rights.” He went from Fort Wayne to New York City to become editor of the World and has received honorary degrees from a half dozen colleges. years ago when he retired and has written a number of interesting books. At present he is looking after the publication of a book on Spain in many different languages. Ho wBl appear at Fort Wayne under the auspices of the Allen County Historical Society. 0 0 Harry "Jack” Irwin, member of the Decatur school board for the last three years was reelected Tuesday night by the city council for another three-year term. Mr. Irwin has been a leader in the present school expansion and Improvement program now in the midst of completion and the council members acted wisely, in our opinion, in mandating the popular Decatur man to continue to serve. Irwin is associated with Hugh Engle in the operation of the Studebaker and Packard automobile agencies in Decatur. Mr. Irwin has contributed freely of his time and abilities to the school system of Decatur and we have every reason to believe that he will continue to do his share toward building our public school system into the greatest in this part of the country. Our community should be pleased that men of Irwin’s caliber are willing to serve on public boards and commissions. Lyle Mallonee, general chairman of Decatur’s annual spring festival, sponsored by the retail division of the Chamber pf Commerce and Kenneth Shannon, chairman of the amature contest conducted in conjunction with the event, report that all is ready for this year's edition of the show which will start next Monday. The Hiawatha shows will take overcame MMwir Monday serf rides and shows will be stationed along Court and Madison streets. The amature show will be held on Court street. The entire event is free to the public and nd doubt will draw large crowds every night. It’s one of the score of ways In which the Merchants unite to say thanks for making Decatur your trading center. The principal way the merchants say thanks is by giving you the best values and best merchandise every shopping day of the year.
