Urge Com Growers To Control Borer Full Use Urged Os Proven Insecticides WASHINGTON (INS) -Producers in the main corn belt were urged today to make full use of tested and proven insecticides io control this year’s attack by the European corn borer. The agriculture department, in a formal statement, reminded growers that DDT and Hyania are both effective weapons in the hands of thousands of farmers whose crops are seriously threatened. Last year the borer destroyed an estimated IM million dollars worth of corn and in many places infestations are expected to be more serious this year than last. The department said that lowa entomologist, for example, have reported counts of more than 14.000 live borers per acre. This is three times the population of the insect tn the same state a year ago. Pointing to other critical areas, officials said that the count in northeast Nebraska has been determined to be 22,000 borders per acre. In South Dakota, the winter Survival of borers is reported to be extremely bigh-77 per cent in some cases. DDT applied as a spray at a rate of one and one half pounds of actual DDT to the acre has been shown to provide the best control of borers in young corn. Either high or loiw gallonage sprayers are recommended tor use so iong as they can develop pressures in the range from 40 to 150 pounds per square inch. Entomologists recommend sprayers equipped with two or three nozzles per row that can be adjusted to direct spray downward from 10 inches above the corn plant and onto the ear area of more mature plants. Here are some effective alternative treatments: 1. Five or 10 per cent DDT dusts, applied at the rate of 40 or 20 pounds per acre. '2. Forty per cent Ryania dust at the rate of 40 pounds per acre. There are also two suggested ways in which the farmer can decide the best time to apply insecticides. The first is the stage at which three fourths of the plants show evidence of recent borer feeding in the whorl. The second is 10 to 14 days after the first borer eggs hatch, if there are atiil 50 or more borer egg masses per 100 plants. ' ’“** The department points out that state experiment stations will is-
