Homemaking Tips By Mias Bartha Landla Homa Demonstration Agent Its strawberry time! The season for Indiana strawberries, fresh, red, and luscious, is principally May and early June. The strawberry is one of the few fruits in our produce department which is native to America. There are several theories regarding the origin of the word “strawberry." One is that straw was used between the rows to keep the berries clean and protect the plants in the winter. Another is that ripe berries were threaded on straw to bring them to market.

0 0 County Agent's Column 0 —— 0 Brucellosis Plan Adams county can become brucellosis free. Many quesnuus have been asked about how Adams county can participate in the new state-wide brucellosis eradication program. What must be done to start our county on the road to brucellosis - free cattle herds? What does the test cost? Who will pay for the testin? What are the advantages in having a clean county? The first thing that is required to star our county on the road to freedom from brucellosis is a petition that must be circulated among the farmers and stockmen in the county. This petition asks I the state livestock sanitary board ! for help in eradicating the disease. | The petition must contain the sigj natures of at least 75% of the ■ cattle owners who own at least i 75% 'ot the cattle. These figures are based on the latest count ot ; cattle in the county. After the petition is circulated, the county i commissioners ask the livestock i sanitary board for an estimate of j the amount of money it will require to test all the eligible cattle ;in the county. This esimate being made, the county council may . then appropriate their share of the testing funds, or make it available, through ordinance, at the first of January of the year follow- , ing. This does not mean, however, that testing must wait for county appropriations. The state and federal governments will proceed I with the testing, and the state 1 will make available to the county, i J their share of the money. The I
I federal government will bear approximately one-half of the testing costs, with the remainder shared equally between the state and I county. This allows testing to proceed at once. The advantages of a clean county are many. Soirie ot them are: > to protect the individual farm herd from the threat of brucellosis; to help dairymen to meet the demands of their milk markets; 1 eliminate the danger of human bricellosis or undulant fever; add to the value of breeding herds; increase the value of cattle offered for sale; make the business of farming more profitable; and to help fartners in maintaining di-sease-free herds. Once the county is certified bru-cellosis-free. the disease-free status of the area is maintained by retesting infected herds, and every third year by a complete retest of all eligible cattle in the county. Meetings are being held in the county with representatives of the state veterinarians office o answer questions in more detail. Your county agent. Leo Seltenrtght. or local veterinarian can also answer some of your questions. Let's all work together to make Adams county 100% brucellosis free. Si IMSERVICV Xi Home On Furiougb Pvt. Glen D.
