A verdict of guilty could result in maximum 10 ji'ear prison sentences and 110.000 fines for each of the seven defendants. In summing up the government’s case, Kelley charged the four men and three women defendants plunged into the “polluted stream” cd Communism and worked incessantly to bring about the downfall of the American government. He contended the government proved conclusively nine of the II "overt acts” for which the group was indicted last August by a federal grand jury. “ “ ■William V. Former President Jrges UN Backing Declares UN Best Vehicle For Peace DENVER (INS)—Former Presl lent Harry S. Truman lumped the United Nations, the atomic age and the Republican administration’s handling of the Salk vaccine program into one outburst in Denver. * “Truman, addressing “some £>oo leading Colorado Democrats at a $25 a plate dinner Tuesday night said he would spend the rest of his life to teach the “next generation how important it is to work for world peace through the United Nations.” The former Democratic president said “with the atomic age, we’re facing the greatest age in the history of the world.” He added: “The only way to prevent destruction is to understand the world is all one community." He cited the UN as being the best vehicle with which to prevent destruction. . Stevenson Speaker ' “fcHItATJELPtHA' (INS) —Adlai Stevenson thinks that effective arms control should be the “very core” of U. S. diplomacy and the _ “very heart of our> communications with other lands." Stevenson told the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Philadelphia Tuesday night that America’s peaceful purposes have at times “been distorted and obscured by saber rattling and bellicose speeches.” The 1953 Democratic presidential nominee told the delegates the nation should press for disarmament because there are “significant and hopeful signs” tha* the Soviet Union’s attitude on arms control may be changing. Stevenson said he doubted that the differences between democracies and communists would be resolved in our lifetime and added that the U. S.’s efforts must be to make sure that the resolution does not take place In the “old arena.” —; — --i Atom Energy Head To Report To Ike Pressing Problem To Be Discussed WASHINGTON (INS) — President Eisenhower receives a report today from Adm. Lewis L. Strauss that could result in a two-pronged drive to satisfy the desire of Europe on questions of war and peace. The chairman of the atomic energy commission who returned last Friday from a month long tour of Europe was' due at the White House for a half hour session with the Chief Executive. The most pressing problem apparently involves an administration move to head off the increasing desire of the peoples of Europe for a “simple" agreement to ban the testing or use of nuclear weapons. The other question Is how to satisfy the hopes of Europe for peacetime atomic benefits. These hopes, according to - Strauss, have been raised to "unprecedented” heights by Mr. Eisenhower’s atoms for peace pool proposal. Strauss said in a speech at Kansas City Tuesday night that he is confident large scale atomic power can be provided, and that his main concern is over the possibility of an atomic ban. Such a ban, he said, would be the “gravest folly" for the U.S. Trade in a Good Town — Decatur

Southwest Vietnam Civil War Reported Full Scale Civil War Is Reported SAIGON (INS) — Full scale civil war was reported today to have broken out 'all over southwest Vietnam between the national, army and troops of the Hoa Hao sect. Gen. Tran Van Soai, political head of the sect, was quoted as declaring a “state of war" against the government of U. S.-backed Premier Ngo Dinh Diem. ” I *' The Hoa Hao politico religious group was one of three sects which formed a “united front" against Diem earlier this year. Diem crushed most of the Binh Zuyen organization during bloody street fighting in Saigon last month. The Binh Xuyen groups which retreated out of the capital were believed to have joined with the Hoa Hao forces under warlord Gen. Baeut. Tuesday, Diem rushed 7,000 loyal army troops into the rice paddy area southwest*of the capital to reinforce the units already fighting the Hoa Hao. There had been unofficial reports that a full scale civil war might break out this week. The sects were said to be planning a blockade of the capital.
