Republicans Worried Over Cily Elections Jenner-Craig Battle May Have Influence INIMANAPOLIS (INS) —Republican .big wings meeting in Indianapolis Friday will have cause to worry about the mayoralty election this fall and the races in the 1956 election. Members of the GOP state committee, which meets Friday, probably will hear tidings that Democrats have a chance to carry nearly all of the larger cities in the state ia November. These Democratic mayoralty aspirants appear to be strong in Indianapolis, Terre . Haute, Rvansville, South Bend and Gary, with Fort Wayne, the only metropolitan exception to prove the rule. A Democratic trend also is indicated in a number of the smaller cities. The Republicans now have 70 of

the state’s lt*4, players. The Democrats have :12 and two have classified themselves as independents. If the btg cities go Democratic this fall, strong municipal machines will come into being that will have a distinct bearing on the 1W56 result with respect to president, senator, governor, state officials and congressmen. Factionalism In the Indiana Democratic party appears to dwindling, but the bitter battle between rival GOP factions continues unabated. It reaches a new high in Washington several sleeks ago when Governor George N. Craig, head of one group, called The leader of the rival faction, Senator William K. Jenner, a “neurotic schoolboy” and Jenner retorted that the governor is a “monkey.” As the villain in the Gay Nineties melodramas used to say: ‘TTbem’s harsh wiords, NelH,” Also, Jenner group leaders have begun a movement to build up a separate Hoosier Republican organisation inrivalry to the GOP state committee wbi?h is controlled temporarily by Governor Craig. Jen-
ner candidates for many offices will be chosen and Jenner money will be collected. The upshot will be a fierce control to obtain management of the state committee next year. Senator Homer E. Capehart, who is running for renomination next year, has realized the factional danger and is hooking hiniself to popular President Eisenhower with tentacles of steel. This Capehart hookup with Ike even extends to secretary of state John Foster Dulles, for whom Jenner has no use. Capehart will drive Dulles to visit the graves of his gneat-great-grandparentfi in Otwell, Pike oounty, aud then on to Indiana University where Dulles will receive an honorary degree on June 12. The GOtP leaders Friday also fear the possibility that the state surplus will dwindle from SBO million to $lO million to S2O million by November. The heat from podtical manipulation of toll road construction likewise is becoming terrific. Then, back in the minds of all
