Activity Grows At Indianapolis Track INDIANAPOLIS INSj Gasoline Alley was nesrty filled today as a count of steering wheels showed 51 of 5.7 Hrs entered for the 39th annual 500 mite race on hand. Activity increased as the first day of qualifications neared and as many cars as possible prepared to take a crack at Jack McGrath’s one and four lap records and a race day ride from the pole position. The Inglewood, Calif., speedster said he planned to break his own records in first day of qualifications this Saturday. About a dozen others also are set to ride Saturday. Three more drivers turned a 140 mile per hour plus lap in practice Wednesday-Bob Sweikert, of Indianapolis; Pat O’Connor, of North Vernon, Ind., and Sany, Jlaqks, of Burbank, Calif. ’ Bill Vukovich, 1953 and 1954 winner, was close at 139.880 in Ws new’ car and it’s likely the Ftjsnb. Calif., flash will try for the pore position from which he won the 1953 race. Troy Ruttman, of Houston, Tex., who drove Vukovich into the wall in 1952 and prevented, as it turned out, Vuky’s becoming the first three straight winner at the Speed way, hasn’t been getting the hoped for zip out of the powerful Novi eight'but there's plenty of time. Although 31 cars took to the track Wednesday, there were no slides such as the three that sent railbirds scurrying for cover Tuesday. Only the brief fire in a car, quickly extinguished, caused any excitement. ■■ Major Leagues Cut i Down Player Roster NEW YORK (INS) —A trio of former stars headed the list and I the Kansas City Athletics did the I most business Wednesday when I fnajpr league clubs met the 25 I player limit deadline.
