Charge Fighter Is Drugged Before Bout PHILADELPHIA (INS) - The Pennsylvania Athletic Commission and Philadelphia police worked today to unravel the case of the good luck" orange, a bizarre plot allegedly contrived to drug light heavyweight contender Harold Johnson prior to a nationally-tele-vised fight. Johnson was ruled the victim of a second-round technical knockout Friday night at the Philadelphia Arena when he collapsed in his corner during -a bout with Julio Mederos of Cuba. . Two commission physicians said Johnson ’definitely’’ had been drugged, and the fighter said he began to feel ill after eating an orange a supposed well-wisher gave him “for luck.” The television audience saw Johnson carried from the ring on a stretcher. Later, he was placed , in isolation quarters at Hahnei mann hospital while medical aui thorities made blood tests and a , stomach analysis. i Commission physicians Dr. Josi eph Aiello and Dr. Wilbur Strickland said it might be early next week before results are made known. Police. Wo questioned the 26-year-old fighter at the hospital, re I>orted that he was accosted on a downtown street immediately after weighing in at the commission offices. A stranger asked for Johnson’s autograph and then, the fighter said, gave him the orange, which he ate in his dresing room about an hour before the fight. Alfred Klein, member of the commission who was at ringside, said that he had “recovered a piece of the orange peel” and that it will be tested for traces of drugs. Klein telephoned commission chairman Jim Crowley at his home in Scranton. He said Crowley had ordered an investigation. Klein reported that he talked to Johnson about 8:30 p.m. and found him alert and in high spirits. The fighter s seconds said he ate the orange. about half an hour later and complained It tasted “bitter.” Decatur High School Golfers Win Match Decatur high school golfers ■ blanked New Haven, 10-0, in a > match Friday afternoon at the Decatur Golf club. 1 .T’ ,t ’ * * 1 Turley Tosses Two-Hitter For Fifth Victory NEW YORK (INS) General Manager Hank Creenbetg insisted this spring that his own rookie, Herb Score, would outshine the New York Yankees* new ace, Bob Turley, the ex-Baltimore fire-baller. , It is beginning to look like quite a sweepstakes. Turley pitched a two-hit shutout and fanned 13 batters Friday as the Yankees whitewashed Boston, 6-0. It was Ms fifth straight victory and bis fifth route-going performance. Bullet Bob now has allowed seven rurtfc and 17 hits and struck out 46 in 45 innings. ( * Score retaliated with a three-hit-ter Friday night as the Indians defeated Kansas City. 4-1, to break a tie with Detroit for first place in the American Ixeague. Herb whiffed 10, bringing his season’s total to 50*, high in both leagues. He has won three and lost one. In addition to blazing speed-, the 24-year-old Turley and Score I ,who will be 22 next month, have one other thing in common. Both are wild enough to keep those batters nice and loose at the plate. Turley walked five ahd hit one batter Friday. Score walked six. Turley came within a scorer's decision of having a one-hitter. Jim Piersall drilled a clean single to center in the sixth. Billy Klaus was credited with a questionable infield hit in the ninth. Both came with two out Turley didn’t allow a runner to reach third. ”, * , Both pitchers got timely, if not -altogether robust, batting support. Mickey Mantle blasted a “winning” home run off Frank Sullivan in the first inning, and Billy Hunter hit another for the Yankees with one aboard in the eighth. Dave Pope and Hank Majeski, subbing for the hiling Larry Doby and Al Rosen, respectively, accounted for three of Cleveland’s runs with ronud-trippers. Pope’s, coming with one on. The Indians were left by themselves in first place when Virgil Trucks authored a two-hitter to best Ned Garver and pitch the Chicago White Sox to a 1-0 win over Detroit. The Tigers fell to ithrd, 13 percentage points behind the White Sox. *-• Washington nipped Baltimore, 2-1, but manager Paul Richards of the Orioles protested the game on the basis of an interference rulnig in the seventh inning. In the National League, the phenomenal Brooklyn Dodgers won their eighth in a row and 19th in 21 games when Roy Campanella doubled home two runs in the 12th inning for a 6-4 decision over Philadelphia. Pittsburgh made it six straight by downing the New York Giants, 3-2. Cincinnati’s third in row' was a 4-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs, and Milwaukee ended a fivegame losing streak, by drubbing St. Louis, 8-5. " Little League Tryout 0 ‘:.
