If you start Mother's Day Sunday by attending Church you’ll feel better all day and all week. Church is the place to pay first tribute to Mother and starting there. It will be easy to make every day in 1955 Mother's Day. | 0 0 Organizations and individuals already are planning to decorate graves in local cemeteries for Decoration day. May 30. Workmen have started to tidy up the burial places and the American Legion plans the usual distribution of flags for graves of veterans of all wars. —0 0 Rev. Virgil W. Sexton, pastor of Decatur's First Methodist church will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon to the graduating class of Decatur high school Sunday evening May 22. Appropriately, Rev. Sexton has selected for his topic “It’s Your Move Next.” £ 0 Democrats and Republicans of Decatur soon will name city chairmen to guide the November election campaigns. Democrats ■ I already have held a few conferences and no doubt will come up with a strong leader to organize the precincts for the important fall election. It is also understood that the Republicans have been screening possibilities and that party no doubt will have a prominent leader to serve as chairman. Good organizations are important, both in helping explain the issues and also in helping get the vote out Voting is a privilege and a duty.

Decatur merchants soon will announce a series of special trading days to extend over the year. Retailers are doing all in their power to give the shoppers of this area the most for their shopping dollar. Read their advertisements and compare their prices with those in any city in the area. We are sure you will be glad that you trade in Decatur. 0 0 Police are occasionally making a few arrests on local streets and that stops the converting of them into speedways for a few days. Then the speedsters start in agarn* Mercer avenue. North Second Street and Winchester Street seem to be the favorites for the young speed demons. We also have noted a good many service and delivery trucks failing to stop at preferential streets lately. Maybe a general crack down on traffic violators would keep our streets under better control. 0 0— Robert D. Cole. Democratic nominee for Mayor has given every indication that he really wants to be Mayor of Decatur. Since his nomination Tuesday, Bob has conferred with several party leaders and has signified a hope that the campaign will start early and be a vigorous one. No doubt the Mayorality candidate will be consulted in the naming soon of a city chairman, because the two men will have lots of important work to do together. The Democrat candidate is a successful business man and he has started out on the quest of the Mayor ship with a vigor which should take him a long ways.

When an invitation has been extended over the telephone, is it all right for a wife to say, ‘‘May I ask John if he has any other plans for that * evening, and then call yop back”7 A. Yes, this is perfectly all right, and often prevents embarrassment, should the husband be unable to accept the invitation. Q. Should an usher at a church wedding offer his arm to every woman he escorts down the aisle, whether he knows her or not? A. Certainly. Q. When a dinner course is finished. should the hostess’ plate be removed first, and if not, whose plate? A. There is no rule governing the order of removing dinner plates. «— SYNOPSIS It the three heirs to old Josh Trevitt's sizeable upstate New York farm remain on it tot at least three months after bis death, each will inherit onethird ol the land. Those leaving sooner must relinquish their share or shares to those remaining, final resident to be awarded the entire tarm. So when old Josh died, bis kin were notified and copies of his will mailed them. In the late spring, we find Jennie Todd, an inheritor, a spinster, at the Trevitt place, making ready her quarters In the rambling old farmhouse, and being assisted by Wick Middleton. executor of the rrevnt estate. Cindy Todd, a pretty iittie motherless teen-ager, loins her Aunt Jenny at the tarm, to tile claim tor her missing’ father’s share of the land. She s disappointed at finding this aunt a timid souk but her day brightens when she,- meets with Gary Norbeck, who hu/eeu assigned a wooded acre on the inace. Then, with much flair, beneficiary Hester Wilmar arrives accompanied by ner daughter Enid. Hester finds everything about the place distasteful, but schemes to win the major lan l award. CHAPTER ELEVEN ENID came m with more baggage. “I'm going to sleep on that little porch. There's an old sofa or something out there.” Hester said: “I’U have the woman come up once a week. She can cook food ahead, enough for just us.” She surveyed her living-room. “Quaint,” she murmured. Though at once she recognized that two of the chairs, like the bed and chest of drawers m the bedroom, were really period things—worth taking back to Buffalo and having done over. A sharp concern struck her. She had in mind to warn Enid about that girl in the back —she should nave done it earlier. She went to the door and called Enid's name. Enid came around the corner of the house. "Come in, dear, I want to talk to you for a moment. I should have before." Enid came in, stood just inside the door. Hester said: "It’s about this girl who claims to be my brother's daughter. I doubt it very strongly —1 feel certain that someone is putting something over on this country lawyer. My brother never wrote to me that he had a daughter—indeed, that he ever had married . . Hester sat down in the nearest chair. "I can’t go into that, Enid — it hurts too much. I was—l am very fond of him. We i have exchanged letters and surely he would have spoken of any marriage, any child, wouldn’t he?” When Eilid offered no agreement in that, Hester went on, "And as long as there is doubt, while you're here, Enid, I’d rather —she really looked common! But I’m certain I can depend on your uudzment and discrimination*

“Thanks, mother," said Enid with an odd smile. "Don’t worry ; about me.” Mrs. Dean came tn from the i kitchen. “That’s done, and as spic and span as anyone could want! i Tve the kettle hot if you'd like me > to fix tea and 1 brought along some cold meat and bread, enough to make sandwich es." Hester and Enid sat side by side on the porch step and ate the ham sandwiches Mrs. Dean had made for them. When they finished, Enid took the plates to the kitchen, and wfien she came back she said, "If you don’t need me, I’ll go for a walk.” Hester went into the bedroom to direct Mrs. Dean’s work cleaning. Mrs. Dean said: “Queer the way they split up this house years ago, don’t you think, Mrs. Wilmer? All because, it's told, Mattie, Trevett couldn’t abide the girl ‘her son married and brought home. So she up and made over this wing for herself. She'd be your great-grand-mother, wouldn’t she ?” “Yes.” “After Bertha died, Josh did for himself in the kitchen. Still he kept things in here tidied — I can’t say there’s much to clean. Mebbe that young fellow who was living with Josh did it for him. Hq. must’ve earned hla keep someways.” “Who is this young man, Mrs. Dean?” "No one can Agger that out. Folks wondered what he’d do after Josh passed away, but Ted Wright at the big store says he seems to have plenty of money.” Hester recalled that Wick Middleton had said he had not found all of old Josh's savings. That was another matter to put into Robert Drew's hands. Hester went to the door that led into Jennie’s room. To her surprise, though the latch moved under her hand, the door would not open. Locked — "How absurd! But, of course, she’s been afraid, alone In there!” "Jennie, Jennie,” she called. She heard footsteps, then a bolt drawn and Jennie opened the door. “Jcnn, why haven’t you been in to see me? You wouldn’t think it had been three years since pre were together!" "I was coming in later ... I thought you'd be busy this .morning." "Jenn, this girl in the back wing —have you talked to her?” “Yes, some." “Has she said anything that proves she is Tommy’s daughter ?" "She spoke of her mother — her mother died when she was very young. But —no, she did not say anvthinz about Tommv."

“Tommy never has written to you that he ever married, has he? He never has written me—and now this young woman appears. 1 am surprised that Middleton did not question it. Really, that you didn’t, when you eame." “She seems to be. a nice girl..." “Oh, Jenn, 1 see you’re still gullible—anyone could put anything over you! Well, I’ll talk to the girl! I must get back how. Enid went tor a walk, but she’ll be returning soon. Then we’re driving to Malone tor an early dinner.” Back in her living-room, a sound brought Hester’s step to a sudden halt. Jennie was drawing the bolt again on the door! “Os all things!” Mrs. Dean came in from the kitcuen. “I've filled your pitcher, Mrs. Wilmer. And there’s warm water on tire stove. 1 filled your lamps, too. Found some kerosene out back." “You’re really a treasure, Mrs. Dean,” declared Hester warmly. "Will you come to me once a week —say on Thursdays ? This is Thursday . . Mrs. Dean had her apron in her hand. She began to fold it. “I don’t work out regular like that, Mrs. Wilmer, but in your case, guess 1 might come—not once a week but now and then." This was not what Hester wanted, but she said: “I’ll be very grateful. We are rather helpless!’’ She found a telegram awaiting her at the telegraph office. Enid had gone into the post-office so she had an opportunity to open it and read it by hexself. “Delighted to have Enid join our party. Sai) on Queen Mary, midnight, July ninth. Baggage must be on ship by 2 o’clock, July eighth. Suggest Enid meet us at Hotel Barclay morning of July eighth. She can give me her check then.” Enid seemed more untalkative than usual on the drive to Malone, indifferent as to where they ate, what they ate, when Hester decided on a possible-looking restaurant. When they were waiting for dessert, Hester took out the telegram. < “I’ll tell you now, darling—the surprise. I realized it simply wasn’t human, to ask you to spend your summer there on that farm, with no young people around, so I wired Miss . Alexander this morning and asked if it were too late for you to join the party. And this is her answer—you’re to meet them in New York on the eighth and sail with them!” Enid took the sheet of paper. There was surprise on her face, but . . “Does dad know?” ... “Os course not. I haven’t hac time to get In touch with him.” (To Ba ContmuedJ
