Swiss and red velvet drape make up the background for the scene and the various unusual bottles of perfume are arranged on a step like affair. To add to the display the girls (accidentally) spilled half a bottle of Janice Hall’s Chanel No. 5 on the floor in front of the case. This is called “suggestive selling!" • * * * The purpose of this project is to give the members of the salesmanship class some experience in arranging a display case. The instructor. Mr. Cobb, offered a few suggestions but the work was done entirely by the girls themselves. • • • * Congratulations to Mr. Zerkel on his recent appointment as principal of the new Northwest school. (INS) —Fif-ty-thousand-dollar-a-week salaries for Hollywood movie stars turueji nightclub entertainers may soon be a thing of the .past in this plush gambling town. Not only are hotel owners balking at the boom-town salaries, but at least one hotelman predicts stars will “hang" themselves by accepting such fabulous loot. “You can’t tell me,” said Dave Siegel, co-owner of the Las Vegas strip's Flamingo Hotel, "that people across the country don't resent entertainers making that much money. ‘(Already I’ve heard dozens of people here ask each other,
'What makes' Liberate think he’s worth that much donghf and when they watch his TV show they ask the same thing." Although Siegel would have trouble convincing some of Llberace's adorihg pyer-40 female saps that he’s not worth $50,000 a week, he pointed dgt that “nobody benefits from such salaries — neither the star, the hotel nor even the government because the bulk of the nation’s taxes comes from the masses.” < f Siegel said the skyrocketing salaries actually “defir” an entertainer to smash all records and to out-stunt every’ other performer on the strip. “It’s gotten so, it’s not who’s got the most talyyt these days," Siegel said, “but who's got the greatest stunt.” Las Vegas “stunt” acts reached a new peak with,Marlene Dietrich and her “nude’* cbstumes. She reportedly got $35,000 weekly for appearing in a dress with a peek-a-boo top and agtain in yards of revealing chiffon in front of a wind machine. Then they reached an all-time high with the appearance of Liberace who dolled himself up in bugle beads and white brocade and did* a littlA hoe-down on the side. in the meantime, Mario Lanza, who was the first entertainer to be offered a $50,000 weekly salary, contracted a sore throat and a case of nerves and failed to collect his salary. Siegel, who produced Ken Murray's "Blackouts” in the T94O's, said he once turned down a $3,500 a week salary for Murray — top money in those days—for a $1,350 weekly spot. “We had plenty of coffee and doughnuts," Siegel said, “and the $1,360 job had more to ‘offer artistically."
