Gene Hindenlang Is Entered In Bike Race BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Gene Hindenlang. R. R. 6, becatur. will compete in the fifth annual "Little 500” bicycle race at Indiana University. May 14. the only collegiate event of its kind. Thirty-three four-man teams, each representing an I. U. men's housing unit, have qualified for the 50-mile race in Memorial Stadium, which is patterned after the Indianapolis motor speedway's 500-mile race. The prime purpose of the colorful race is to raise funds for scholarships for students working their way through the university. The race produced more than SIO,OOO for scholarships last year. Hindenlang, a freshman at 1.U., will ride for the South Cottage Grove residence hall team. They stopped at Poe for fuel and refreshment, including five lollie pops and a gallon of gasoline. Wild life was enjoyed along the route. Blue wing teal, large squirrels, black ducks, fish three foot long, numerous large tyiwks and cranes were observed. Entries Completed For 500-Mile Race Fifty-seven cars form the official entry list for the 39th annual 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on .May 30, 1955. Their power plants include 50 four-cylinder non-supercharged engines; one eight-cylinder supercharged engine; and the Planacircle Special which is described as a new engine of radical design with no cylinders. Walter Strader of Los Angeles, Cal., who entered the Planacircle Special, says “The fuel mixture is compressed in two combustion chambers through a system of rotors and the engine is capable of developing SUy horsepower." Other cars certain to attract more than ordinary attention are the Ferrari-Bardahl entry, the Joe Thorne entry and the new streamlined car with an enclosed cockpit entered by Chapman Root of Terre Haute for Driver Jimmy Dalwalt. The Ferrari-Bardahl car is a Kurtis-Kraft "roadster” with a sipcylinder Ferrari engine from Italy; The Thome car is a fourwheel drive creation with a new six-cylinder engine and the streamlined car will be powered with a conventional four-cylinder MeyerDrake engine. The only frontdrive car in the field this year is the- Novi Air Conditioner Special which Troy Ruttman is scheduled to drive. When entries closed at midnight on April 15. only 11 cars still lacked drivers. Os the 46 pilots already certain of cars, 33 have participated in one or more previous sbC'-mile events; five have passed their driver's tests in recent years, although they never have earned a starting position; and eight are cookies who will be required to take the 100-mile test before attempting to qualify this year.

Don Paul Is Signed By Cleveland Browns CLEVELAND (INS| — Coach Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns today announced the signing of defensive halfback Don Paul to a 1955 contract. Paul, a four year veteran in the pro ranks, became a member of the Browns last year in a deal with the Washington Redskins. The Browns gave up rookies John Carson and Dale Atkeson for Paul. In announcing the signing. Brown said: “Don took over an important spot in our defense backfield and became outstanding because of bls fine tackling. Not only that, but with Don available for right half, it enabled us to shift Tommy James to a safety position where he was in a there familiar job.” During the off season Paul lives in Tacoma, Wash,, working in his father-in-law’s paper mill. Thief Gets Cash At Wolpert Home Here Either the invisible man has returned or a real call thief is in operation in Decatur. These facts can be verified by Mrs. Ed Wolpert of 230 Llmberlost Trail. , Mrs. Wolpert arrived home at about 10:30 o'clock Saturday night. Noticing that the house was chilly, she laid her coat, keys and purse on a chair and went to the garage to check the furnace switch. She returned to the house and went to bed. Mrs. Wolpert said she heard a noise that must have been a door closing, but thought nothing of it. Sunday morning her keys were laying on the floor but the purse was gone. The purse contained approximately |SOO. i It is believed that the thief entered the hotjse through either a front window or the front- door which were unlocked, and waited for the occupants return. It is also believed the culprit threw the furnace switch intentionally as a distraction. There were no signs of a forced entry. D.H.S. Baseball Team Loses Two At Marion Decatur, high school baseball team was defeated twice in a double header Saturday afternoon by Marlon high school at Marion. The local team dropped the first game 134 and lost the nightcap, 6-0. The game with New Haven high school previously scheduled >tw this afternoon has been moved up to Tuesday afternoon at New Haveh. Brownell Defends Using Informants Claims Necessary In Communist Fight WASHINGTON (INS) — Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr.. strongly defended today government use of confidential .informers. Brownell declared: “Without the use of confidential informants, it would be almost impossible, as a, practical matter, to combat effectively the communist conspiracy in this country.” The attorney general. # in a copyrighted interview’ in “U.S. News & World Report,” said the communist party in the U.S. “is weaker today than it was some years ago, but the effort .of the Russian government to infiltrate our government is still strong.” He reported tiiat there are “only about 5,000” loyalty cases now under investigation out of the total government payroll of two million. 3vu thousand. Hoosier Legislator, Farm Leader Dies Jesse Andrews Funeral Tuesday WEST POINT, Ind. (INS)—Funeral services for Jess C. Andrew, 66, president of the International Livestock Exposition and veteran indjana legislator, will be held Tuesday afternoon at the family home in West Point. The body will be entombed in the family mausoleum in West Point cemetery. ' Andrew, who had been Hi for the past three years, died during an afternoon nap at his home on his 890-acre ranch Saturday afternoon. Andrew, who had served as ihairman of the House Ways and Means committee, which drafts the watchdog of the treasury. He the state budget, was known as had been head of the Livestock Exposition for four years. He attended Purdue University for two years and, also studied at the old- Agricultural College at Ames, la., in 1949. Purdue gave him an honorary doctor of agriculture degree. For 22 years, Andrew served on the board of trustees of the state prison at Michigan City. Survivors include the widow, Elizabeth: three daughters. Mrs. Maurice G. Knoy, of West Lafayette; Mrs. Maurice R. Neville, of Lafayette, and Mrs. William Post, of Long Island. N. Y., and a son, Jess C. Andrew. Jr., of West Point.
