Manager Stan Hack s most pressing problem may be to keep the last-place Pirates oft his team’s tall. The Rruins of 1955 dop’t fighre to be much better than the 1954 club which finished seventh. This could be fata). Even the pitiful Pirates claim to’ be much stronger. Not enough seems to be added am> big Ilalph Kiner s home run bat has been subtracted. Here’s a rundown on the team: Catching- Not much to boast about. Harry Chiti. discharged from the army, may help some. Pitching- Bob Rush. Warren HSt'ker, Paul Minner, Howie Pol-

let. Jim Davis, and Harry Perkowyki are all potential winners, Among new face question marks are Sad Sam Jones. Al and rookie whit Bob Thorpe. Infieldt-Ernie Banks and Gene Baker form a good short-second combination. Edd Miksis good with the bat. Randy (third base) Jackson hits the long one at times as do first basers Dee Fondy and Steve Bilko. Outfield- Too much depends on slump-and-hit Hank Sauer. Frank Baumholtt is the No. 2 man. often mentioned as 1 trade bait. Hack's concern is finding a third man, but we won’t have a great outfield, in any case. Consensus: Seventh or eighth. BALTIMORE ORIOLES The Baltimore Orioles are a question mark ball club that could turn into an exclamation point in the American League pennant race. Don't look for any pennant bids by Paul Richards’ new look Birds. In fact, they aren’t likely to get out of the second division- „._J But the contenders will find the Orioles o? 1955 a much improved club, thanks to the off-season trade’ maneuvers by the cunning Mr. Richards. The angular • gent contends his team has improved in hitting, defense and reserves. The club still lacks over - power and it's a question as to whethter the “on paper’’ improvements show up in the boxscores. Here’s how the Birds shape up: Catching- Competent. Les Moss and rookie Hal Smith, part of the Yankee mid-winter deal, are solid. Matt Batts is the No. 3 guy. Pitching- Better than last year despite Bob Turley’s departure. Ex-Yankees Jim McDonald and Bill Miller, ex-White Sox hurler Don Johnson and ex-Dodger Erv Palica figure to Roister the crew. infield- Many men for Rich-i ards to juggle around. Gus Triandos will play first, but his hitting is a problem. Billy Cox (second) and Vem Stephens (third) are aged, but ex-Dodger Cox is probably one of the best glove men in baseball- Others in the infield picture include Bobbv Young, Willie Miranda, Johnny Pesky. Bob Kennedy. Don Leppert, Kai Segrist, Freddy Marsh and-Eddie Waitkus. Outfield- that Yankee deal again(Gene Woodling adds to the offensive and defensive qualities Os an outer garden thpt formerly had on(y Cal Abrams and Gil Coan. ExTiger Hoot Evers should be a help,

it# spots. Consensus: A team that wifi cause trouble. It will wage a strong battle to go higher than seventh place. But it doesn't appear to be destined to get out of the second division this Reason.
