Varied Grid Fare Offered To TV Fans NEW YORK JIN«) — The exoedlence or otherwise of the college football games yon see on television this fall will depend, five weekends out of 12, upon sheer geographical accident. On seven Saturdays and Thanksgiving Day, the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s newly approved grid TV plan will offer a national “Game of the Week" Just as it has for the past three years. The way the dates fall, these offerings will include the traditional Army-Navy game standby and probably the annual Notre Dame-Southern Methodist affair, which baa become another video fixture. The remaining five weekends—ah, there's the rub! They're to bei devoted to regional telecasts, and that could be very good or rather horrible, depending upon where you live. If you live in the midwest, on the west coast or the deep south, chances are you’ll have no com plaints, There are plenty of strong teams, and the net result is almost certain to be a more exciting and interesting armchair season than any other since the NCAA slapped on controls. But supposing you live in the east If you are an Ivy League fan, it is possible you’ll still enjoy yourself. But if you are a bigtime football fan (and believe it, the two types are NOT synonymous), prepare for some dull weekends. Here’s why. Outside of Army and Navy, who else in the east can match the glamor of Ohio State. Michigan, .Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma or UCLA, Yale. Harvard, Princeton* Only if, as mentioned before, you are “a dyed-in-the-wool Ivy Leaguer. According to the NCAA restrictions, a given school can be seen either once nationally and once in its own region, or twice in its own region if it doesn't appear nationally. Army and Navy, playing each other as the piece de resistance of the national program, use up one of their appearances. Each, then, can be seen once more within the eastern area, it would be possible to show a “name” invader from somewhere else,- Notre Dame, for example, since a visiting team appearance outside your own area, doesn’t .count against yj»i. .„■> e” But how many Os their few choice spots will the eastern teams allow an outsider to usurp? Each school wil be under heavy pressure — from alumni, and so forth—to get on video at least once, and the idea, after all, is lo disperse the TV blessings as widely as pos sible. The... Ivies. wiU waM to shawcaae some of their teams, and so will the big independents like Holy Cross, Boston college, Boston uni versity, Villanova and Syracuse. It is easy to see how the whole thing can get very complicated, exoe pt, of couw, for „ the.. TV watcher, who will have to take whatever is thrown his way. There seems to be one way to beat it a little bit. Move your residence astraddle the dividing line between two districts. Presto, on those five all-re-gional Saturdays, you have a choice of two games.
