KATHRYN NORENE SINGLETON IS ENGAGED TO WED Mr. and Mrs- Frank Singleton of route two, Decatur, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Kathryn, to James Edward Ritter, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Ritter of Decatur. Miss Singleton will graduate from Monmouth high school this spring and her fiance attended Decatur high school and is employed hy the Schafer store. (The wedding will take place in the Mount Pleasant church on June 5, at 2:30 o’clock. XI ALPHA XI MEETS RECENTLY Xi Alpha Xi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met recently at the home of Mrs. Glenn Hill. The business meeting was conducted by the
president, Mrs. Francis Ellsworth. State day will be held in Gary in June. A donation of $5 -will be given to the Red Cross appeal. A report was made by Mrs. Hill on the polio vaccine project. Mrs. Robert Lane presented a very interesting lesson on "Our Town.” She also displayed daily papers published during the centennial of 1936. A social followed and refreshments were served by the hostess. ANNUAL ACHIEVEMENT DAY SCHEDULED MAY 7 The Adams county home demonstration council met Wednesday at the new Farm Bureau building in Monroe. Plans were made for the annual achievement day to be held Saturday, May 7, at the close of the national home demonstration week. Each of the 21 home demonstration clubs in Adams county will place an exhibit which will be open to the publier These exhibits will be judged by Mrs. Gertrude Glasgow. Wells county home demonstration agent, and ribbons awarded to the winners. Besides these exhibits, Adams county home demonstration womeu wil Isponsor a bazaar and bake sale, and a style show is also being arranged. Committees were appointed for the annual county picnic and to investigate the purchasing of a rsetaurant type gas range for the new 4-H grounds. Any club member who would like a home demonstration association pin, should place their order at the county extension office by May I.—, SOCIAL MEETING IS ~ HELD BY AUXILIARY The American Legion auxiliary unit 43 held their regular monthly social meeting at the Legion home Tuesday night. Cheer messages were written an sent to Mrs. Frances Monohan and Mrs. Mildred Darwachter, who are patients at the Lutheran hospital in -Fort Wayne. Games were played and prizes were awarded to Mrs. Elizebeth Hersh, Mrs- Mildred Smith, Mrs. Clara Bauer, and Mrs. Anola Crist. Refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Agusta Baker, Mrs. Harriet Pollock, and Mrs. Mildred Beltz. The Eagles auxiliary will have a regular meeting Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock at the Eagles ball. Nomination of officers will be held and a birthday party will follow the business meeting. The Church of God Missionary society will sponsor a bake sale Saturday at the Firestone store at 9 o’clock. The Adams county chorus met Monday evening for their regular meeting and practice- Marvin Myers of Purdue university was present at the meeting and he instructed the chorus for future work. Mr. and Mrs. Carsons, of Jolfet, 111., stopped today for a brief visit with the John Heller family. They were enroute home from West Palm- Beach, Fla., where they have spent the past several winters. Riley Stewart, son of Mtn. Catherine Stewart of Decatur, captain of detectives in Kalamazoo, Mich., was honored recently for outstanding detective work in bringing about a solution to the murder of Miss Marilyn Kraai, a. student nurse at the Kalamazoo state hospital. Captain Stewart directed the Kraai murder investigation and in less than 12 hours a 16-year-old patient at the hospital admitted the crime. Portland has contracted Dr. J. R- Mitchell of Purdue to give the commencement gddress to high school 'seniors and guests May 25. From 1948 to 1950 Dr. Mitchell served as chief of the second educational department for the U. S. government in Bremen, GermanyCol. and Mrs. J. F. Sanmann have returned to their home in this city after a vacation of several weeks in Florida and other southern states. Mrs. Bessie Chilcote left today for Los Angeles, Calif., where she will visit her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Chilcote, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Swearingen, of 409 North Third St., left today, for Fort Worth, Texas, where their daughter, Mary Ann, underwent an emergency operation.
