•aby shower held FOR MRS. PLUMLEY 'Mrs. Vernon O. Thieme and Mrs. Edward J. Marbach were hostesses to a surprise baby shower Sunday, given in honpr of Mrs- Russell Plumley. The shower was held at the home of Mrs. E. R. Davidson. Games and quisles were held during tire afternoon with prizes being awarded to Mrs. Fred Isch, Mrs. Joe Ditto, and the Misses 'Marilyn Braun, June Edwards, Arlene Myers. Gwen Hilyard and Mrs. (Noble Lobsiger, who in turn presented them to the honored guest. After Mrs. Plumley opened her many gifts, delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses. Those present were: the Misses Mgrilyn Braun, Gwen Hilyard, Arlene Myers, Ruth Weigmann, ■Cheryl Lobsiger, June Edwards, Jeanette Hahnert, Jacquline Rpidenbach, and Kay Johnson, the Mesdames E. R. Davidson, Herman Sautbine, Lester Sautbine, Joe Ditto, Fred Isch, Noble Lobsiger, and the hostessesMiss Sue Troutner of Fort Wayne was also in attendance.* Those unable to attend were: Mrs. William Sautbine, Miss Belva Miller, and Mrs.-Tom Butler: RESEARCH CLUB MEETS MONDAY AFTERNOON “France and the Provinces," was the topic presented by Mrs. J. J. Thompson to the Research club Monday afternoon. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Virgil Sexton. In her discussion Mrs. Thompson described Normandy, Brittany, and all the leading cities of France. Beautiful pictures illustrated her presentation. At the close of the talk a brief business meeting was held conducted by Mrs. E. H. Cook. It was announced that the guest .day luncheon will be held April 18, at the Masonic Jiall.

SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY HELD RECENTLY A surprise birthday party was held recently in honor of Steven Leon Ross on his fourth birthday. The party was held at the home of Mrs. Gerald Ross. Steven'was greeted on arrival by “Happy Birthday,” sung by all hie friends, and after blowing out his candies, refreshments were served. Steven received many gifts. Those present were: Pamela Lister, Diane Hueston, David Ross, Vicky Strickler, Cindy Ross, Monty, Sherry, and Gayla Ross, Pamela and Bobby Johnson. Carol and Danny Stallbaum, and Gary and Michael Ross. PROFIT AND PLEASURE — CLUB HOLDS MEETING The Profit and Pleasure home demonstration club met at the home of 'Mrs. Wilbur Lengerich for an all day meeting recently. The meeting was opened by singing the song of the month, and devotions were given by Mrs. Delmar Connelly. Roll was answered by a bargain that wasn’t a bargain. A short business discussion was held followed by a demonstration on aluminum tray ,craft and how to make fiber flowers, by Mrs. Ralph Bluhm and Mrs. William Kohne. A potluck dinner was served at noon and the table centerpiece was a birthday cake in honor of Mrs. Connelly. The afternoon session was opened by a most interesting lesson on safety in the home, presented by Mrs. Alton Corson. Two lessons, "House and Garden,” and “Table -Manners and hostessing,” were given by the home demonstrating agent. Miss Bertha Landis Games and contests were "held during the social hour and the door prize was won by Mrs. William Kohne. Two new members were welcomed into the club, Mrs. Leonard Schwaller and Mrs. William Kruse. Mrs. Robert Nyffeler was a guest. *— AUXILIARY SEEKS HELP FOR RETARDED CHILDREN Work tor retarded children is drawing increased interest and attention from the American Legion auxiliary’s one million members, according to Mrs. James Baker.

The couple was married at the Willshire Methodist church by the Rev. James Hipkins. Mrs. Robert D. Shoup attended the bride as' matron of honor and Miss Carolyn Charleston was bridesmaid. Robert D. Shoup served as best man. Die new Mrs. Arnold attended Willshire high school and the bridegroom attended Bluffton high school. He is now serving with the IJ. S. air force in Tucson. Ariz. This work Is a new phase of th'e auxiliary’s national child welfare program and tm» auxiliary is seeking to give expanded cooperation this year to organizations devoted to the welfare of mentally retarded children, she explained. ‘'Since we became interested in the problem of retarded children,” said Mrs. Baker, “American Legion auxiliary child welfare workers have been amazed to learn that this condition afflicts ten times as many children as crippling polio. Among children of veterans, who are the auxiliary’s special interest, there are estimated to be 800,000 mentally retarded. Authorities tell us that 300 retarded children are born in the United States every day. ............ "We have also learned that much can be done for these children, and we intend to make it our purpose to see that everything possible is done in our communities We are hopeful .that our Jarge membership caa. tk»lp the national association for retarded children arouse the people’of America to concerted action on this problem. Modern Hospital” was the subject of a talk given by Dr. John Terveer at the meeting of the Rosary society Monday night at the K. of C. hall. - . Dr. Terveer told the group that the local hospital is rated in the lowest class of hospitals in the state and that it must be enlarged and modernized. He urged the members to promote an addition to the hospital and to support any attempts to improve it. His talk followed a business session during which Miss Helena Wehmeyer was appointed financial secretary to replace Mrs. Ben Webster, who has resigned. The group voted to make a donation to the Red Cross fund and to help finance a project of making whjte Communion dresses for children whose parents could not afford to buy them. New members welcomed into the club included Mrs. Helen Steiner. Mrs. Marilyn Dowel, Mrs. Virginia Teeters, Mrs. Doris Leonard and Mißs Martha Kelley. Mrs. Jesse Sutton was in charge of a social hour which followed the meeting and program. The Rev. Philip Fusco, a Fort Wayne priest, will be guest speaker at the next meeting of the society in April. -• W. S. C. S. EVENING CIRCLE MEETS MONDAY Mrs. Robert Colter was hostess Monday evening to the W. S. C. ST evening circle one of the Methodist church. Mrs. Carl Gerber, chairman, presided over the business meeting. Mrs. Mariam Hall was elected chairman of the circle for the coming year and Mrs. Childs was appointed secretary. The lesson, “The Compassion of Jesus,” was presented by Mrs. Fred Soldner. Twenty-three members and two guests, Mrs. ...Virgil Sexton and Mrs. Leonard Soliday, were present. Refreshments were served by the hostess, Mrs. Colter, assisted by Mrs. Upvid Heller and Mrs. Robert Ray. The Runalistic study club will meet Thursday evening at 8 o’clock with Mrs. Herman Geimer. I*he GE choir, will rehearse Thursday evening at 7 o’clock in the high school music room. The Root township home demonstration members entertained their husbands with a carry-in supper at the Monmouth school last evening. Hilight of the program was a. talk presented by Mr. and Mrs. John Gage on their recent tour of Europe. The members of the Mt. Tabor Methodist W. S. C. 8. joined Mr. and Mrs. Austin McMichael in “elebrating their 40th wedding anniversary recently. Mrs. H. W. Culbertson had charge of the lesson study for the month and Mrs. Arlo Drake presided over a short business meeting. Mr. and Mrs. McMichael received many gifts and contests were enjoyed with prizes going to Mrs. Carl Daniels and Mrs. Dorwin Drake. Raines was convicted on an arson charge Monday at a home from which he had been evicted 1 as a roomer. Police said they had no reason to be suspicious of Raines but when he vehemently protested his Innocence to a grandson of the home owner, the probe turned toward him. Adams Central FFA Winner In Contest The Adams Central chapter of FFA won first place in the poultry judging contest with a team consisting of: Chris Neuensctrwander. Richard Kaehr, Arlen Mitchell, and Jerry Mitchell, and a total score of 2,655 points. Five schools competed in this contest. Berne French school was second and Monmouth, Jeffersn, and Decatur chapters followed in that order. The team will go to the district contest on April 23. This year’s district winneF'wlli go to the state fair instead of Purdue, to compete in the state contest. GIRL SCOUT Troop five met recently. We opened our meeting by saying the Girl Scout promise and singing the Girl Scout song. We collected the dues. Sally Hahn visited another troop and she told the activities of that troop. We played the game called telephone and the game called statue. Brownie troop 18 met Friday evenin gat the Zion Evangelical and Reformed ehurch. We opened the meeting with the Brownie promise and the Byownie song. Election of new officers was held. They are: president, Esther Klientob; treasurer, Linda McAnelly, and scribe, Ellen Houk. We started to make nose 'bags. Then we closed with the Brownie song. Scribe, Ellen Houk y Girl Scout troop 17 was opened by , Jane Bedwell have the scribe read the minutes of the last meeting. The" roil and dues were taken and the secretary’s report was given.'We talked about our dancing program and also the handicrafts which we have started. W£ discussed making favors for the Veterans hospital in Fort Wayne. Two large-barns on the Benjamin Keller farm on route 1, near Kingsland, were destroyed by fire Saturday evening. The value of the buildings was $'15,000 to $20,000. Loss bn the contents was also large, including much valuable machinery. Only 56,000 insurance was carried. A suit demanding $365 damages from Angeline J. Sharpe of Deoatui? has been filed in common pleas court at Van Wert, O.
