th* days of early Christianity, eggs were forbidden during the Lenten period. They were generally served Easter morning at the breaking of the long fast. Sometime during the early centuries, people in Russia, France, Germany and other European countries began to decorate the eggs to give them festive significance, These decorations later became very elaborate and kings or emporors hired expert jewelers to fashion beautiful decorations for the eggs. Among the more elaborate were the jewel-encrusted eggs which opened to reveal surprises. While such elaborate decoration finally lost popularity the custom of ‘dressing up' the egg has never completely died out and is now becoming even more popular. With the egg tree at the library Miss Heller has put up a mural which depicts the egg tree custom of the Pennsylvania Dutch. The mural is a copy of the illustration in the child’s book entitled “The Egg Tree,” which was written by
