Elks Clubs Os Indiana Help Cancer Research
(Editor's note: This is one in a aeries ot articles on cancer research underway at the Indiana University medical center which is supported by funds contributed by Elks clubs ot the Hoosier state.) INDIANAPOLIS — Laboratory tests used in cancer diagnosis and treatment tests which are vital tools in the slow, uphill fight agaidbt this dread killer — are undef study at the Indiana University medical center here, throdgh research grants from the Indiana Elks. Researchers in the clinical pathology laboratory is the studies, which are aimed at improving methods of testing cancerous cells and tissues. Such tests enable physicians to Identify the type of Cancer present, to predict the course of the disease, and to judge the kind of treatment to use. Frequent laboratory tests also help judge the progress of various treatments and their effect on different kinds of caneers. A Special kind ot cahcer which workers in the laberatery have under study affects the salivary glands. This cancer is not too common, and in the past has been poorly understood. The laboratory recently study of 120 cases of salivary gland tumors. Surgery, the report says, was effective in 80 of the 129 cases, and X-rays had some effect in a few of the remainder. He is also directing similar research on malignant tumors found in children. These cancers are also in the “poorly understood” class. Under a special Elks grant, a study of how cells develop in animal embryos was carried out on the I. U. Bloomington campus a few yehfs ago by Ricftgfff McAlpine, a diedical student from Michigan City Who has since received thb highest gride ih nationwide examinations of the nar tionll board of medical examiners. of cell development — how so many, varied ceils grow frOhi simple, similar cells. This kind of knowledge may help explain cancer, since cancerous ceils are in a sense reversions to younger forms of normal cells. This is an example of basic research which, although it may have no immediate practical application, may some day prove to be the foundation for major. Scientific developments. Examples of this kind of thing are found throughout the history of science —for instance, the discovery of Hertzian waves, the basis of radio, nearly a century before the invention of radio itself.
