Scout leaders to be on the lookout for a young girl, wearing a Girl Scout neckpiece, eliciting funds without authority. The girl has called on several Decatur people, both in the residential and business areas, asking for contribution for the cancer fund. Cancer fund officials and Girl Scout leaders both state the solicitations are unauthorised. A similar incident was reported about a year ago. Trade in a Good Town — Decatur

know this but many feel puzzled about it all the same. Our prayers seem feeble and useless and we may even be tempted to give them up entirely; but many who give up praying would keep on il they only knew how. AsH There is so much in the New Testament about prayer, that a person may well read it through with this one question in mind. Let any reader who wants to try this, start out with a good translation of the New Testament (the R. S. V. for instance or some other modern and readable version) and a blank notebook. In each dajrs reading notice every reference to prayer—who prayed, why, how, what the result was; or what is said about prayer 1 (as for instance by Jesus and Paul). Some points, it will be found, come out over and over again. Others may be touched on rarely. But few days will go by without the reader finding something that can be jotted down in the notebook, which may have for a title: What I Have Learned About Prayer from the New Testament. One thing will certainly come out from the first: Prayer is domething God expects of all His children. Prayer is a privilege but it is also a duty. You can raise all the riddles about prayer you can think of—and lhey ai-A. mamr. You can think oi ah ausArxof things that seare you aW»y^lren»- -pr ayer— uwri insignificance, God 4 gr eateesii. tie strong possibility that you m«y not know what is really best for you, and sc forth. But' all those things were true when Jesus gave His friends those three simple commands: Ask! Seek! Knock! There are blessings that come only to those who ask. There is light to be found only by those who seek. There are doors that open only to the voice of prayer. Without confidence, prayer ends before it starts. • T , In Jesus' Name One thing Jesus said has met with much misunderstanding: “If ye ask anything in My name, I will do it” It is not right to think of this promise as attaching a magical influence to the form of words “In Jesus* name, Amen.” It is not true that any prayer ending with those words is a prayer that will be answered, and any prayer not ending with those words will not be answered. That is not what Jesus meant at all. Take the story of the two prayers, the publican’s and the pharisee’s (Luke 18:9-14). Would the pharisee's prayer have been answered and honored if he had ended that proud petition, or rather that prayer of thanksgiw ing, with the words "In Jesus’ name"? Os course not. If he had added such words they would have been out of place. A prayer in that holy Name is truly in the Name only when it expresses the mind of Christ, only when (so to speak) he could sign to it. The more nearly our prayers are like what our Lord Himself would think of, the more nearly they will come to being fully answered. Our Lard’s Prayer The most famous prayer In the world, the one most often repeated by Christians, is the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus did not intend this as a formula. A Christian who never prays except in these exact words would not have understood what Jesus taught about praying. What Jesus did mean by giving us this prayer is to show us the "manner” of prayer—that is. the lines on which true prayer must be made. The reader is encouraged to study this short but wonderful prayer again and again, as a guide to his own talks with God. Qne very important thought is 4p »the very, first word: .‘."GurZLlf.the. t first “How" of prayer is confidence Jn Sod, the second is harmony W"itfe mind ofCfiTist,..-aha She third is suggested by this word "our"—remembering we are not alone. If any desire is selfish it is desire that God will not Bless. Judge no ole more harshly than you judge yourself. God does not demand a beautiful vessel for his work but a clean one.

The Consecrated Car By Mrs. J. R. Meadows He couldn't speak before a crowd: He couldn't teach a class, But when he came to Sunday School, He brought the folks ‘enmasse’, .He couldn't sing to save his life: In public couldn’t pray, But always his jalopy Was “crammed'’ on each Lord’s Day. And, although he could not sing. Nor teach, nor lead in prayer. He listened well, he had a smile And he was always there. With all the others whom he brought, Who lived both near and far . . . And God’s work prospered . . . For he had a consecrated car. Load up your car next Sunday and be in ( your church and see your Sunday School grow.
