North Side Is: Favorite In Elkhart Meet ELKHART, Ind. (IN’S) — Although the four regional sites which will send one team each to 1 the Elkhart semi-final of the state I hardwood tourney are tied for the 1 lead with sectional repeaters, they have the lightest shows in the state this Saturday. Only one of the four regional defenders is returning, Fort Wayne North, which is more or less favored to take the regional title and the Elkhart semi-final. Aiding and abetting whoever takes the Elkhart semi is the bowling crowd that forced the firing ftom Fort Wayne to Elkhart and precipitated the shift of Muncie from the northeast to the Indianapolis show. Fort Wayne North is paired with Avilla at Fort Wayne in the first game Saturday. Auburn and Monmouth return from last year to play the second game. North beat Auburn for the title last year and beat Auburn this season in the only mutual games of the foursome. Three teams also returned at Kokomo but the power is missing with high-ranking Kokomo in the bleachers as a result of Northwestern's uprising. Peru, a 7-12 runner in the season, plays the upsetters first. Hoosier conference titlist Sheridan tries 8-11 Wabash in the second game. Some excitement is in store at Marion where Huntington township tries for a 26th straight victory. The Townshippers lost their opening game and have come home free ever since. They play Hartford City. Bluffton meets Fairmount in the opener at the Marion regional. Another defending conference king will be in action in the Elkhart regional. That’s Warsaw of the Central Indiana conference meeting Lapaz in the first game. Nappanee, percentage leader with 20-3 overall, will try to do for Mishawaka what it did for Elkhart — namely turn the team into tourney spectators. The two teams did not meet during the season. Fort Wayne North finally began playing under its new coach when the tourney began and has to be this choice for the Fort Wayne crown. Mishawaka came on fast, closing with four wins over tough cookies and snrvtvTtig a rough sectional, to win the nod as favorite in the Elkhart show. Peru beat Wabash by one point during the season in the only game played within the foursome. Peru should be around for the nighttime game- but Sheridan is more likely to win the title round. Look for Hartford City to overcome a pile of obstacles for the Marion crown. Kansas City Club Is Fined By Frick BELLEAIR, Fla. (INS) —The Kansas City Athletics have been fined $350 and six team members and a clubhouse employe a ■ total of $325 for indulging in spring training before the March 1 starting date.
