THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT. DECATUR, INDIANA
Jasper Chief Upset Victim On First Day INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — Little Holland proved itself "dumb” as it “misunderstood” what was meant by “Jasper is the team to beat in the Southwest.” The Flying Dutchmen not only were night frightened by reputation but took the theory to heart and sacked the Wildcats of Jasper, 59-52 from the Indiana high school basketball tourney. Firing opened in 55 of the 64 centers which will crown that number of champions this Saturday night from the field of 752 which started play Wednesday. So far 172 have been sidelined. Among those no longer with us is Jeffersonville, whose Red Devils couldn’t stand Providence, 525.0. But otherwise things followed fairly close to form. Muncie Central played double-or-nothing with city-rival Burris and swamped them, 84-42, in a game which figured to be the International New Service title choice’s toughest sectional game. At Indianapolis, Crispus Attucks broke loose in the fourth quarter to swamp Washington, 79-51. Three undefeated squads got by the first games while the fourth, Evansville Lincoln, opens this evening. All-winningest team, Williamsburg went to 22 in a row when it dumped Economy, 50-37, in the Richmond sectional. The other two unbeatens each annexed a 21st straight—Francesville eliminating the Rochester defender, Kewanna, 55-38, and Chesterton bumping Morgan Township out of the tourney, 78-44, at Valparaiso. Mishawaka ended South Bend Central’s 1953 state titlists bid early, 66-61, but Switz City had hopes of taking the Wabash Valley to the state title room for the first time as it opened with a 7728 victory over Scotland at Linton. Sixteen, of 23 sectional champs got by the first tests in Wednesday night activity. Falling by the wayside were South Bend Central, Jeffersonville, and Kewanna already mentioned and Huntington 56-58 to Huntington township in overtime; Middletown 43-44 to host New Castle, and Mentone 32-34 to Milford at War- ■ -saw-.;--- * — Successful openers were turned in by Monmouth at Adams Central; Brazil; Danville; Fowler; Frankfort; Auburn -at Garrett; Hartford City; Winslow at Huntingburg; Indianapolis Crispus Attucks; Scottsburg at Madison; Michigan City; Muncie Central; Rushville; Sheridan against Walnut Grove 67-59 and against Windfall 63-52; Farmersburg at Sullivan,, and Union City at Winches- . tes«- ■ „ -nwa-jri n BOWIING 'tCOPFS American Legion League First State Bank took two from Burke Insurance; Macklin took three from Fuelling; Team No. 8 took two from Mies Recreation; Ashbaucher took two from Bultemier. Franks of Decatur route five. About $25 damage was done to each vehicle. The brakes failed to hold on K car owned by Cecil Egley, of Wren, O„ and the' car coasted into another car parked in the city parking lot on Monroe street at 5:15 -p.m. Wednesday. Dulles, Eden *' • t Meet Tonight On Asia Issue ; I differences Over Formosa Situation I 1 May Be Discussed BANGKOK (INS)—Anglo-Amer-ican differences over the handling of the Formosa situation may come up for discussion between secretary of state John Foster Dulles and foreign secretary Sir Anthony Eden tonight. An American spokesman said Eden gave no indication at the opening of the council meeting of the southeast Asia collective defense treaty (SEATO) that he was trying to induce U.S. appeasement of Red China. tyut. the spokesman agreed, if Eden intended to work for an American “deal” with Peiping in exchange for a Formosa cease-fire he would save his big guns for a private dinner tonight at the home of U. S. Ambassador John E. Peurifoy. In Washington, Wednesday, house foreign affairs committee | chairman James P. Richards (D---d.C.) asserted that Eden was attempting at Bangkok to lead the 1 U. S. “further down the road to appeasement” of the Chinese Reds. The American spokesman said Eden made no objection when Dul- ( les offered a detailed defense of the U.S. position in the Formosa crisis at Wednesday’s SEATO session. Dulles brought up the touchy . Formosa question although Nat- , ionalist China is not one of the . sight nations of the Manila pact. The secretary of state presum- . ably outlined defense -plans which i included the Nationalist forces. The SEATO delegates began the , exacting task today of creating the , military, economic and intelligence agencies which must carry mt the principles of the Southeast i Asia Alliance. . They thrned their attention first to the creation of a secretariat ( and a body of permanent delegates to carry on the work of the j Southeast Asia treaty organlza- ’ m when •’’<» SEATO council is . not In session. A communique issued after this morning’s session of the Bangkok conference stated that the minisi ters agreed to designate represen- . tatives from each nation who will emain in Bangkok to assure "close and continuing cooperation.” ~ The ministers were expected to >egin discussion next of the crealon of an intelligence headquarers, designed to combat subverfve activities in non - Communist . The Umdon Daily Mail, In a dispatch from Bangkok, said today that Dulles told the conference that America does not intend to join any Southeast Asian alliance built on the lines of the North Atlantic treaty organization. The Ixnjdon newspaper added that Dulles' comments "surprised some delegates and disappointed a majority since they expected more from Washington than he appears to have brought.” Trade in a Good Town — Decatur ——■■■MaWMMSßSHaasa"
