Plant On Slopes — Despite Rainfall Spring Traditional Time For Planting SAN FRANCISCO (INS) — Spring is the rtaditional time for setting out shrubbery and other plantings, but just as traditional as planting is spring rain. This is especially annoying to new home owners who have a bank that needs planting, both for beauty and erosion prevention. I A method has beep developed in , the San Francisco Bay area — where steep slopes are a common problem — that might well be copied by homeowners faced with the same problem in other sections of the nation. Use burlap as a protection from rain-caused erosion. The cost is not prohibitive, and ' if by any chance you have access 'to a supply of burlap sacks, the only cost is the energy you expend j in sewing them together, j But even if you buy theb urlap and have it sewn to proper size—most stores which sell canvas or sail will do this — the cost is not too high. Holding the burlap in place on . the bank is simple — attach it to i a header board at the top of the I slope with large headed roofing | nails and hold the burlap down at the base with rocks. Secure the side by driving spikes through the burlap into the ground. To plant on the burlap covered | ! hillside, cut slits in the btfriap and put out your shrubs and plants, j When the rainy season is oyer the burlap can be removed, or it can be left to rot on the ground, t By the time the burlap has disintegrated. the soil will be firm and the shrub roots wel lenough established to hold the bank in place. Homemaking Tip By Mlse Bertha Landis Home Demonstration Agent What could be more beautiful in a room than a naturally finished hardwood floor? A scuffed up, dirt-stained floor can make an attractive room look shoddy. With little work, lots of sanding, and a good durable finish almost any hardwood floor can be made to look new. There are three main steps to refinishing a hardwodo floor. The first is sanding — the floor must be leveled and the old finish and scuff marks removed. Next, the floor should be prepared for a new finish. Deep acracthee and cracks
