Postpone Probe Os Fort Wayne Union Hearing Postponed, Shifted To Capital WASHINGTON (INS) — House un-American activities committee ' chairman Francis Walter (D-Pa.) said today he postponed a probe of the alleged Red-dominated independent United Electric Worker* union because it might have helped the union continue Its hold on a vital defense plant. The hearing, which had been slated to open in Fort Wayne, lnd„ this Monday, was postponed a week, when it will be conducted in Washington. Meanwhile, a vote will be held in Fort Wayne to determine whether the U. £.. the International United Electrical Workers (CtO) or the United Automobile Workers (AFL) will be bargaining agent for the Magnavox plant in the Indiana city. Waiter pointed out, in a speech entered in the congressional record, that 95 percent of Magnavox production is under defense contracts. He declared: ‘’This postponement was agreed to very reluctantly, and only after it was feared that false and malicious chargee made against the committee by the U. E. might result inthis Com-' munist dominated union continuing as the bargaining agent in the vital defense plant.” The U. E. was ousted from the' CIO in 1949 On charges that its leadership was Red-dominated. Motorized Truant Officers In Paris PARIS (INS) —Kids playing hooky from school in Paris have run up against motorised truant officers. The motorised anti-hooky drive is part of a campaign by Paris authorities against juvenile delinquency, which has Increased recently. Thirty truants were caught during the find four day* of the operation.
