Postpone Probe Os Fort Wayne Union Hearing Postponed, Shifted To Capital WASHINGTON (INS) — House un-American activities committee ' chairman Francis Walter (D-Pa.) said today he postponed a probe of the alleged Red-dominated independent United Electric Worker* union because it might have helped the union continue Its hold on a vital defense plant. The hearing, which had been slated to open in Fort Wayne, lnd„ this Monday, was postponed a week, when it will be conducted in Washington. Meanwhile, a vote will be held in Fort Wayne to determine whether the U. £.. the International United Electrical Workers (CtO) or the United Automobile Workers (AFL) will be bargaining agent for the Magnavox plant in the Indiana city. Waiter pointed out, in a speech entered in the congressional record, that 95 percent of Magnavox production is under defense contracts. He declared: ‘’This postponement was agreed to very reluctantly, and only after it was feared that false and malicious chargee made against the committee by the U. E. might result inthis Com-' munist dominated union continuing as the bargaining agent in the vital defense plant.” The U. E. was ousted from the' CIO in 1949 On charges that its leadership was Red-dominated. Bing Crosby Denies Retirement Plans Top Crooner Denies Retirement Rumors HOLLYWOOD (INS) — Crooner Bing Crosby, still recuperating from that kidney stone operation, felt well enough today to put the blast on “those solo retirement rumors.” The old groaner said he'd be darned if he'd ever quit. “I don't know how those reports get out,” he said, referring to the most recent whisper that be la planning to permanently' give up emoting — with or without Grace Kelly. “Maybe the people who put out those reports know more about me than I do.” he added. “They could be interested in my health, I guess. * “What they probably mean is— Crosby has worked hard for more than 25 years and he ought to retire!” But supposin' he did’ “Yea, supposin’ I did.” Bing intoned. “What in heaven's name would I do then? A man can play just so many boles of golf, he can visit as many countries as are listed in the World Almanac; fish only a certain number of streams ■ and miss only a given number ofquail." . But the main reason Bing works is because he has to get out there and claw the air.
