YELLOW JACKETS The Decatur Yellow Jackets, playing very alert and agressive basketball, defeated the Portland Panthers on the stage at Portland last night 59-54. It was a Decatur ball game all the way, with margin much greater than the final score indicates. John Neireiter got the Jackets off to a quick start with a field goal on his first try and added another seconds later. Terry Murphy also hit on his first attempt and the locals led 64. The Panthers pulled to within one point at 10-9. but the Jackets widened the gap again for a 16-12 first period lead. Decatur stretched out in the second quarter and led by as much as 12 points. Murphy's seven points in the period led the Jackets to a 36-29 half-time bulge. Bob Worthman's boys continued to outplay the Jay county quintet in the second half, leading most of the time by at least 10 points. The score at the end of the third quarter was 52-41. Portland made a last effort in the final three minutes as for the first time in the game the Jackets failed to hit on their close-in shota. They managed to whittle seven points off the Jackets' lead, but could come no closer. The real tale of the game is in the statistics as Che Yellow Jackets hit almost 40 percent ol their shots, making 21 of 55 attempted field goals. The Panthers hit an even 25 percent, canning 22 of 88. The Decatur team worked the ball very well taking t no shots of more than 16 feet and most of those were good open ones. ■Murphy led the local scorers with 15 points and Fred McDougal hit 14. Black led all scorers with 19 points as he hit very well from the back court. A tight tone defense thrown up by the Jackets forced Portland to shoot a lot of long shots and only Black's consistency kept them in the game. The Yellow Jackets will entertain the Tigers from Fort Wayne Central in their home finale next Tuesday and will wind up the season at Garrett Friday.
