The interior department's bureau of land management which has direct control of much of this vast domain gives a break-down showing why ft Is getting harder and harder for the homesteader to stake out a claim. Os the total, an estimated 179 million acres of the public lands are in national forest reserves, national parks and wildlife reservations. There’s little chanoe that any of this acreage win be released for purely private entry. About 25 million acres is tied up in military reservations of one

kind or another under the jurisdiction of the defense establishment Another interior department agency — the bureau of reclamation — has reserved 10 fiiillion acres of arid land which it hopes to make productive. Homesteaders eventually will get a erack at some of this acreage. Then there are, of course, Indian reservations throughout the country but mostly concentrated in/the western states. These account for 57 million seres, although they are not strictly speaking federal lands. The remaining 180 million aerqp or so constitute the bureau of land management's chief responsibility. These are so-called vacant lands, unreserved portions of the public domain. They are termed vacant but that doesn’t mean they are idle since all but approximately 10 million acres are producing revenue of one kind or another. Officials say the present administration is trying to strike a middle of the road policy regarding these lands so that they will wind up about equally divided between federal and private ownership. Some of the uses to which these lands may be put include grazing, mining, mineral leasing and home steading. These are some, but by no means all. The fact that these tracts may be far removed from larger holdings has made management of them difficult and costly in many cases. But above all, adentnistratioh officials say they are determined that there will be no haphazard disposal of public lands. Austin — Clergymen outnumber bartenders about three to one in the state of Texas. New Delhi — India’s second fiveyear plan includes the introduction of a television network not later than the year 1967. Washington — There are less than half as many independent banks in the U. S. In 1954 as there were in the year 1921. - ■—■■ ■ —.— APPEARING before the House armed services subcommittee in support of the administration’s new reserve program. Army Oilef of Staff Gen. Matthew Ridgway declares that, in the event of a full-scale war, it would take about 10 months to get American Army reserves into combat overseas. Ths new program would cut this time tn half, he said. f Intemattonal>
