Duquesne Ist To Accept Bid To Tournament NEW YORK (INS) — Duquesne university, seven times a bridesmaid in the national invitation basketball tournament and never a bride, has decided to have another go at it next month. Walter T. McLaughlin, chairman of the NlT’s basketball committee, announced Wednesday night that the Pittsburgh school is the first to accept an invitation to the annual classic scheduled for March 12-10 at Madison Square Garden. The Iron Dukes, ranked sixth in the nation by International News Service, have lost only to George Washington, Dayton and St. Francis of Pennsylvania. Their one-two punch was gone, however, for these three affairs. Ace playmaker Sihugo Green was out with an appendectomy attack when Duquesne lost to George Washington and All-American Dick Ricketts was hampered with an ankle injury during the other setbacks. Eleven more teams remain to be picked for the NIT, which is trying to beat the NCAA to the name teams. Among those being mentioned are San Francisco, Holy Cross, Cincinnati, Manhattan, Dayton, Connecticut, Louisville, Marquette, Niagara, Penn State, St. Francis of Pa., Villanova and Tulsa. Under the present rules a team cannot appear in both tourneys. Regional playoffs for the NCAA begin March 7, with the finals set for Kansas City, March 19. San Francisco Dons Keep Up Winning Ways By Internationsl News Service The University of San Francisco Dons, who like to be called the Nb. 1 basketball team in the nation, proved that they belong on top Wednesday night by defeating College of Pacific, 72 to 52, to extend their victory string to 15 straight The Dons have an overall season record of 17 and I.i— That one defeat came at the hands of UCLA. In a second meeting between the schools, the Dons scored an avenging triumph over .the Bruins. Only five more games remain on the USF schedule and coach Phil Woolpert is confident the Dons can win them. He points out the Dons have improved with each game and that the team has one of the best defensive records in the nation this season. Opponents of the San Francisco team have been held to just a fraction over 50 points a game. Wednesday night’s victory was a case in point. Bill Russell, 6 foot 10 inch center, racked up 27 points for the Dons to take scoring honors. Kentucky, rated second by International News Service, won its 16th game by soundly beating Georgia, 86 to 40. The Wildcats have lost two games this season. North Carolina State listed fourth in the INS ratings, triumphed over William and Mary, 126 to 99. State now has a 20-4 record. Duquesne, sixth ranked by INS, boosted its season record .to 14-3 with a 62 to 27 runaway win over Carnegie Tech. Plan League Here Os Junior Bowlers Organization of a Junior bowling league in Decatur, affiliated with the American Junior bowling congress, is being completed, according to an announcement made today. All boys and girls of junior and senior high school age may be sanctioned with the American Junior bowling congress, and the local league is open to all boy and girl bowlers of this age group of Decatur and vicinity. The leagues will bowl at the Mies alleys on North Second street, with definite times for the league bowling to be announced later. Reduced bowling rates will be in effect for this league, and the alleys will provide free rental, of bowling shoes. --™ Free instruction will be afforded for all new bowlers, with experienced bowlers giving the instruction. The sanction fee is 25 cents per member. Leagues may be composed of all boys, all girls, or they may be mixed. AJBC membership cards will be issued to each member of a sanctioned league. iAt the conclusion of the league season? trophies and medals will be awarded to the leading teams and individuals. Wheeler Is Named Athletic Director BRAZIL, Ind. (INS) — Harold Wheeler, who coached high school basketball at Brazil, Ind., for 25 years before he was forced to resign for “hot headedness”, today was named athletic director at the school. A letter signed by 54 of the city’s 62 teachers charged the school board with “witowing a group of angry parents and their juvenile offspring to incite them and at the same time depreciate their own judgment, disgrace the school and community, jeopardize the school’s sports and humiliate an individual teacher.”—— 5 High school principal C. President On Quail Hunting Expedition On Hunting Trip On Georgia Plantation WASHINGTON (INS) — Preei4ent Eisenhower takes off from Washington today at 1 p. m. EST., for a long weekend of quail bunting at the Georgia plantation of treasury secretary George M. Humphrey. The first lady and her mother, Mis. John S. Doud, will accompany Mr. Eisenhower on the trip for a brief respite from the busy world of the White House. Secretary and Mrs. Humphrey will complete the party. The President found the hunting excellent on his previous visit to the Humphrey plantation a year ago, bagging close to hia limit of quail with ease. He went duck hunting with Humphrey in Ohio in November, but thia will be his first try at quail since last February. The Eisenhowers plan to return to Washington late Sunday in the Presidential “ plane, Columbine 111, which will fly them to Georgia today. The 600-acre Humphrey estate is near Thomasville, in the southwest corner of the state.
