The President has sent the Seventh Fleet into hostile waters in the Far East to evacuate several islands. Let us hope that it is a move that eventually will lead to world peace. While writing this however we are moat fearful that the evacuation move is a dangerous one. 0 O' Experts of the Indiana Taxpayers association who as a rule are well versed in state government say that if the spendoing tendencies of the General Assembly continue, Indiana won't be far away from a billion dollar budget Such ® extravagance should cause every taxpayer to become a careful voter in the next and every election. - 0 0 Television is doing one great thing. It is bringing to the people of the nation an opportunity to hear and see our Senators and Representatives in Congress. After we have heard many Senators in recent weeks, it has given us much more respect for the judg- ~ ment and comments made by the — local people who frequent the Court House benches in the summer. 0 ® Wednesday is Dollar Day in Decatur. sound policy. Then and only then should this nation and the other strong powers of the world join hands and help. 0 0 We salute the Boy Scouts of America on its 45th birthday, now being observed during Boy Scout Week. Since its founding in 1910 the organisation has enriched the lives of over 22,750,000 boys and adult leaders. Truly Scouting represents a living cross section of American life. Boys of every race, religion and economic background are attracted to Scouting. Today we find 2,700,000 boys in its ranks. Add to that impressive figure the 960,000 adults of good character who give generously of their time and talents to serve as leaders of units, Merit Badge Counselors and in many other capacities. There is hardly an American family that has not felt its influence. — Or. A. Betuck. the Chief Scout Executive, a leader in the organisation since 1913, feels that it is of vital importance to train the boys of today to be reedy for positions of leadership as they grow to manhood. "Strong character, participating citizenship and physical fitness,” he says, are needs of our boys and young men who are served by the program of Scouting in cooperation with the home, the school, the church, and all other community institutions actively Interested in training our future citizens.” Scoutlng’s purpose, stated in the Federal Charter granted by Congress in 1916, is to promote the "ability of boys to do things for themselves and others.. to train them in Seoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues.” Every member of the nation's 95,000 Scouting Units is indeed “having some kind of experience that is adding to his equipment to meet the problems of adult Ute.” — .... It is that training that we heartily endorse on this noteworthy birthday. failed to take any effective steps to fulfill this pledge." The executive council of the AF*L, at its winter meeting in Miami Beach Sunday, specifically attacked “right - to - work” laws, which ban the closed shop, and called for thorough revision of the Taft-Hartley act.
The atoms can then be measured by the Geiger counter. The Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York recently announced new advances in lung cancer research. Institute scientists reported the first successful growth of normal human lung tissue in laboratory animals. According to the scientists, this procedure will be used to help them determine "whether or not components of clgaret smoke that cause cancer in mouse skin will also do so in the human lung." Another Aid A progress report released by the Institute’s board of trustees also describes a new diagnostic aid for the earlier detection of lung cancer. A gentie washing of the respiratory passages collects cells discarded from the linings of these passages. If an early cancer is present, the cells may be found in the washings. Such a procedure may also permit study of cellular changes which precede development of lung cancer. QUESTION AND ANBWEB G.
