Antoine Pinay Seeks To Form French Cabinet Former Premier Is Selected To Head French Government PARIS (IMS) —Antoine Pinay met tbte mornfog with ousted Premier Pierre Mendea-France to get a first-baud account of the problems he will face if he succeeds in forming France's tlst government sitice the end bt the German occupation. Pinay, a former premier noted for his “save the franc” battle against inflation in 1962, accepted President Rene Coty’s Invitation Sunday to attempt to form a cabinet. He plunged Immediately into conferences with leader* of the various parties in the national assembly. The premier-designate also summoned top officials of the French North African colonies to a conference Tuesday, an indication of his concern over the issue which caused the downfall of the Meade* France government. Nleay ho*>ee to be able to decide, possibly by toaight, tt he will be able to term a government, and. If successfifl. to expected to present hl* new cabinet to the national assembly Thursday. He is said to be trying to form what mlgtet be called a "national union” government. The Paris newspaper FranceSoir remarked this mornlag that hie success or tnllnre would de-
pend largely on hi* ablltiy to enlist the support of the Popular Republican (MRP) party, which torpedoed Pinay e last cabinet in IMI Apparently he hopes to group his own Independent pariy, usually regarded as tight wing, w«h“ the popular Republicans,’-tts Social Republicans (former Gaulists) and the Radical Socialists (moderates) against the opposition of the Socialists and Communists. Pinay. who held the post of premier from March through December of 1962. is no stranger to votes nt confidence. He was teeing ab most Certain defeat In three whan he resigned on Dec. 28. 1962. in a dispute over the national budget. He will need all of this experience when he faces Mie unpredictable and divident national asembly. His appreciation of this problem was obvious when he declared Sunday after his meeting with Coty that “the recent parliamentary debates have demonstrated both the gravfty“’ot the problems and the urgent need for a solution.” The collapse of the MendesFrance administration left several vital issues still unsettled. T,he North African question, which brought about Mendes - France's downfall, still must be decided, and se must the touchy issue of France's 1956 budget. Warn Weed Problem To Be Troublesome Drought Areas To Be Hit This Year WASHINGTON (INS) — If it’s true that troubles never come singly, then it may be that some farmers, particularly in drought area* in the west, may have serious w-epd-control problem* this year. Coforado A and M extension service specialists have already made a fist prediction that such will be the case. " They base this opinion on the fact that certain perennial weeds, being deep-rooted, can reach ter down into the soil for moisture and thus tend to become more troublesome during a long, dry period. a Some of the better-known chemical weed killers can be Os great assistance in licking the problem this year. But no termer will be wise to put his sole reliance tn them. A* one top agriculture department specialist stated recently, nothing will ever completely replace good cultivation practices a* a means of controlling weeds. The Colorado specialist* have some other suggestions. On cultivated or irrigated land, . they say that a planting of alfalfa t can be used to squeece out some s types of perennial weeds cheaply t and easily. 1 The controlling factor is regular mowing of the alfalfa. This, of course, prevent* the from bearing seed, and those who recommend It claim it can lick the problem in a maximum of four years. specialists point out . that for the method to be snetnss- , ful the soil must be well supplied > with phosphate tn order to produce i a vigorous stand of alfalfa. If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad. It brings results.
