Discussion questions on the Sunday school lesson. New Life in Christ, for Sunday. February 13. 1. How consider the soul as related to the body? 2. What are the evidences of the soul as being one's life? 3. H6w important is the soul? 4. How proceed 'to give the soul eternal life? 6. What are evidences of a soul saved? Lesson Prayer: Lesson prayer: We are grateful that life is precious in the sight of God and that such generous provisions have been made for its eternal welfare. Grant that an increasing number all over the world may turn to thee, O God, and be partakers of thy divine nature. Our Preacher Says: Save your best thoughts, your best smUes, and your greatest self, for those of your family. We are so apt to give our best to strangers. and keep our worst for those at home. IcreatnedjSl I Comments on as»< ®n| Lessoned H Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson. New Life in Christ, John 3:1-7; Acts 16:25-34; II Corinthians 5:17, for Sunday, February 13. The Must way to be saved is to be born again. This Must way is re-inforced by the words, “Verily, verily , . which are used ‘ only in connection with a great truth. There are no substitutes for entering the new life in Christ, such as joining the church, religious education, good works, observances of ordinances, all of which are of secondary consideration. V. 5. "Jesus answered. Verily, verily, I say unto thee. Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God." Water and the Spirit are not strictly coordinate. Water is not an actual agency in the second birth; it is only a symbol. In the following verses the Spirit alone is mentioned. Regeneration is a spiritual experience wrought by God through the Spirit. V. 6. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which Is born of the Spirit is spirit” The character of man's spirit is changed in this new experience. To be born as a little child Is a physical phenomenon; the second birth is a spiritual phenomenon. To be born of the Spirit is something tn addition to, and mare advanced than, physical birth. V. 17. “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." These unseen things in the realm of the Spirit are real and ought not occasion surprise. V. 25. ‘‘And at night Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God; and the prisoners heard them.” When afflicted, one can spend tirtie Well in prayer and singing God's praises; here is the secret on getting victory out of suffering '.. this may pave the way for a reception by others of Christ as Saviour. V. 28. “Arid suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's hands were loosed." God’s’appeal is sometimes accompanied by physical disturbances that deepen spiritual convictions such as an accident, sickness, death, revival services, etc. V.i7. “And the keeper of the ZION LUTHERAN West Monroe and Eleventh Street Edgar P, Schmidt, pastor The Church With Carillenlc Bells 8 a.m„ the early worship. 9:15 a.m., Bible school. 10:3D a.m.. the worship service. prison awakening out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and would have killed himself, supposing tbat the prisoners had beeh fled." The keeper took his job seriously, accepting the penalty of death for being derelict of his duty. A helpful frame of mind was in evidence. V. 28. "And Paul cried with a loud voice, sgying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here." Suicides are not the will of God; Christianity embraced will stop them. Paul was in earnest, hence his loud voice. V. 29. “Then he called for a light, and sprang in and came trembling, And fell down before Paul and Silas.” Though free, Paul and Silas waited in their places, giving the keeper a chance to express himself. The keeper had convictions regarding the new way and his unfitness to accept the plan of salvation. He was on his way as a recipient. V. 30. “And brought them out and said. Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The keeper recognised his helpless condition; he co-operated with God in the earthquake freedom to Paul and Silas. The keeper was willing to make things right, hence he brought them out of their cells. V. 31. “And they said. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thy house.” Here is taught man’s ©art in his salvation. There is a deep inner movement toward God, carrying with it full surrender of sin and self; none of self and all of Christ is repentance verified. V. 32. “And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.” Instruction, based on the word of the Lord, is essential to salvation. Faith in Christ is contagious so that the beeper’s family were converted. V. 33. “And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes, and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.” The spiritual operation was a success, baptism being its recognition of it. The following verse confirms the genuineness of this transformed life. V. 17. "Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature ;■ old things are passed away; all things are become new." When Christ is enthroned -within, his kingdom cbmesi afid“an acceptable life to God is a fact. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education.
