Argument Over Auto Ends In Two Deaths Ex-Deputy Sheriff Kills Wife And Self SOUTH BEND,- Ind. (INS) —A foreser St. Joseph county deputy sheriff, who killed his wife and wounded a daughter in a shooting spree, died of self-administer-ed overdosage of sleeping pilfw today. Peter V’erselder. 46, was found unconscious on the floor of his cell in St. Joseph county jail, where he was held on charges of shooting and killing his wife. Ann. in an argument about driving the family car. Verselder was rushed to the hospital but was dead on arrival. . Mrs. Verselder was shot through the head with a .38 caliber bullet when she argued with Verselder about driving the car after drinking. A daughter, Mary Lou, 19. was reported in good condition at the hospital where she was treated for fiye wounds believed to have been caused by three bullets. Two other children, Nancy, 13, and Kathleen, 6, .fled when the shooting began and were uninjured. Mary Leu said her mother had called police earlier in the evening and told them her husband. Peter Verselder. 46. was too drunk to drive the car. Mary Lou said her father came storming into the house with a pistol and a club cursing about the police. The daughter was wounded when she stepped between her mother and father. Verselder barricaded himself tn the house and answered Lt Richard Stickley s telephone call to surrender by saying he would kill himself or police would have to kill him. A rubbish tire he built himself and tear gas finally forced Verselder onto the porch where he surrendered without a struggle. Firemen extinguished the basement blase. Police found ‘ the body of Mrs. Verselder in the .kitchen and placed preliminary murder charges against the former law man. Rural Youth Will * Attend Hockey Game Members of the Adams county rural youth will meet at the counr ty extension office at 7 o’clock Saturday evening to attend thb hockey game-in Fort Wayne. The Ko met s are scneaulea to play Johnstown at 8:15 p.m. The hockey game is one of several special activities planned by the rural youth this year.

Mo Farren. 77-yearold i’oaelo man, five miles west and IM. mitetv. north of Berne, last Thursday. Me Farren died Friday of a skup fracture and other injuries. McFarren was driving the car on the right. The driver of the other car. Chester lech. 35. of Bluffton route 4. and his seven-year-old son Phillip, were injured. The accident occurred when McFarren hit his brakes at a bridge, and skidded into the path of lech's vehicle. . ’
Blue Goose Lights On Second Street A Canadian blue goose startled Decatur residents Monday evening at 5:50 pm. when it lit on Second street in the business section. Mont., where 55 inches of snow already has been reported on*the ground, got additional snow- today. Snow also fell in Wisconsin. Michigan. Illinois. Indiana. Ohio and in parts of north central Kentucky. Both Louisville and Lexington reported a trace of snow on the ground. lowa, South Dakota and North Dakota also listed snow and a similar report of flurries came from the northern Rocky mountains. Motorist Is Fined On Traffic Charge Lester L <Geyer. of route 4. arrested by g.ate -poir e at 11:10 a. m. Saturday for failure to signal for a turn on V. S. highway 324 'wq miles east of Decatur, was f.ned 14.75 by justice of the peace Flcyd Hunter yesterday. The pa t.rolman charged that Geyer, who was headed east, turned without ’signaling abnrprley. when followed by a line of traffic, almost -causing a serious accident.
