Fordham Grads Resent School Dropping Sport NEW YORK (INS) —When Fordham university wit football last month, nobody was more surprised than its '23,004 alumni In general and, specifically, a small group of aid grad# who had been working overtime to assure the future of the sport. Nobody consulted tfiem. First they heard about It w'as oVer the radio, in the newspapers or, depending upon the mall service, when they received a form letter from Fordham’s president, Father Laurence J. McGinley. “We thought we were over the hump,” said Bill Healy, an insurance executive and one of the Rams’ more enthusiastic supporters. “ Sure, there'd been some bad years, and 1954 was one of the worgt. But we had a strong freshman team. Probably the greatest in 16 years. “And we had schedule commitments for the future-wlth schools like Oklahoma - t’** would have put us on our fact financially." At first the alumni were stunned, then “fighting mad.” The Fordtarn alumni association appointsd a special committee to attempt something that, so fir as anyone can recall, never was accomplished before. The alumni believe they can bring the Ram back to life. They are aware of tremendous odds against them, but ' they believe they can restore football to the Fordham campus, even though it is officially dead and burled. “We're taking father McGinley at his word,” said Bob*: Whalen, a member of an investment firm and a spokesman for the alumni committee. “Me has said that he considers football an integral part of collegiate life-but that Fordham can no longer afford to support a - team." Thursday, a letter went out over the signature of alumni president" Vincent W. Tunney to all Fordham "graduates, it contained a frank ap . peal for funds-enough to pay oft * deficits which Father McGinley indicated last AAfcitfci.wodfijje in the neighborhood of 190.004. After that the alumni group would organize a "dollar-a-month” club to keep the sport healthy. All of it would be handled within the regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In addition to alumni, the Fordham appeal will be turned into a sort of community project for New Yorkers, who now have no major 'grid teftm in their midst except Ivy League Columbia. "Already," say committee members, "were been deluged with calls and tetters frdm aluinni and friends making concrete offers of financial help.” So far, the football crusaders do not know if the school will consent to resume the sport, even if financial backing is assured. Other prohlems are a 19*56 schedule *■ five cf nine opponents have arranged replacement games - and the task of persuading the players T6"slVckll out ;*while. A f?W Stready have indicated thev’M transfer to otAer schools, “All we can ask the rest." said committee members, "is to give us a chance. We're certainly going to give it the old college try."
