Fanner Losses To Weeds Still Heavy Figure Loss At Four Billions EacffYear WASHINGTON (INS) — Farm losses which can be blamed on weeds are estimated to be on the order of four billion dollars a year despite amazing advances in control methods. One agrclulture department calculation places this staggering toll on a level with the combined losses due to insects and diseases and second only in money value to the damage done by soil erosion. In recent years the big news in this field has been herbicides —- chemical weed killers — and still more recently killing weeds by electricity. The latter method still is more or less In the experimental stage. Even though a chemical like 2-4-D is used to kill weeds on about eight million acres Os corn land each year, there are official warnings that more research is needed in this field. For example, some experts contend that there has been almost no attempt to find out whether the use of such chemicals will have

Another problem derives from the fact that In killing off one type of weed pest the chemicals, in effect, provide more growing space for others which they do not control. The possibility arises that farmers in using the chemicals may, in some instances, be creating problems more difficult to handle than the one they had to deal with originally. In this field, the scientists must also deal eventually with a situation comparable to that in which the fly developed resistance to DDT and other chemicals. Weeds can, and do, become resistant to attack ,J|y the same chemical year after year. Even the most enthusiastic proponents of chemical weed killers recognise that these materials can never do the Job alone and that proper cultivation practices will continue to play their part. The experts view good, clean seed as the best starting point for producing crops relatively free of weeds. They insist that, along with the use of chemicals, farmers must continue to prepare seed beds thoroughly, to cultivate cleanly and at the riglu time, and,to make good selections of adapted seed varieties and fertilizers In order to keep ahead of the weeds.
