He also said that Robert Kunxlg, the majority counael in the Republican B»rd cong raw, has tendered bis resignation, and that the Democratic leadership has accepted it. Chairman Francis Walter (D Pa.), indicated two weeks ago that Kuneig would be fired from the cojnmittee. The Pennsylvania congressman also told newsmen at that time that he could see no need for both a majority and minority connsei. Walter is intent on reducing the si,o of the committee's staff and
to limit its investigations to alleged Communist infiltration of defense industries. He believes the committee can operate on considerably less money than it has in the past. The decisions made by the Democratic leadership, however, are tentative since the GOP has not yet officially made its committee assignments. It is likely the committee will organize on Thursday it Republican members have beep appointed by then.
Most Os Costa Rica Reported Quiet Today Only Small Region Os Costa Rica Is Alerted On Rebels RAN JOSE, Costa Rica, (INS) — AH of troubled Costa Rica was reported qniet today except for a small region in the northwest around the town of Santa Rosa where government troops remained on the alert. However, another rebel attack in that area which was the scene of fighting bver the weekend was considered more and more unlikely as the government numerical superiority increased daily. Official circles speculated that the rebels planned to disperse hoping to escape capture during final mopping up operations. Persistent reports that rebel leader Teodor Picado Jr. had been killed in action could not be confirmed officially. The young Pieado,* son of a former Costa Rican president, had been.named as commander of the rebel forces. The rebel radio, heard in Managua. denied Picado’s death, and said he still was commanding the forces in the field while former president Rafaeil Calderon Guardia had assumed over - all command. - The arrival of four U.S.’ ■ supplied F-61 Mustang fighter planes at El Coco airport seemed to be enough to scare the rebel air force out of the skies. The planes, which were provided at the recommendation of the organization of American states tOAS) investigating committee, will not go into action for several days. The Costa Rican pilots who will fly them need some gunnery training which the American pilots who ferried the planes south will provide. In Managua, the GAS committee held its first meeting Monday with Nicaraguan President Anastasio Sqmqza. The committee had put off its departure for several days to continue its examination of evidence presented by Costa Rica that Nicaragua bad aided the rebels. -- — -. ——- —— In Washington, the Nicaraguan embassy announced that two rebel planes described as AT-6 trainers which landed at Rivas airport had been seized and the pilots intern-c-d The ambassador saiA this proved Nicaragua’s determination not to aid the rebel cause.
