Monmouth Wins County Net Title

Eagles Defeat Decatur Commodores, 70-49, In Final Battle Saturday

The Monmouth Eagles added another championship to their crowing list of titles Saturday night, j annexing the Adams county tourney crown by defeating the Decatur Commodores, 70-49, in the final game of the 1955 meet, held before another packed house at the Adams Central gym.. The Eagles wou the 1953 and 1954 sectional championships, and have now copped the 1955 county toga. The Eagles, who had survived a hectic overtime battle with the Adams Central Greyhounds in an afternoon semi-final, 63-57, took the lead over the Commodores midway through the first quarter, and were never headed. Coach Dave Terveer's lads were in the lead only twice, Joe Wilder hitting the first fielder of the game, and after Norb Witte knotted the count, a pair of free throws by’ Jerry Voglewede put Decatur on top, 4-2. Witte k- ;ed the score and Paul Fubrmqn hit from the field ft/V a 6-4 lead and the Eagles were in front to stay. Coach Porky Holt's chaiges held a 12-8 margin at the end of the first quarter, and then limited the Commodores to only seven points in the second period to carry a big 31-16 advantage to the dressing room at the half. Walt Mowery and Wilder led a desperate Commodore attack In ■the third period, coming within seven points four different times and trailing by only eight points at the end of the stanza. 47-39. Stew Schnepf, despite playing with an injured back in both the Saturday games, added 11 points, the only other Eagle in double figures. Joe Wilder, who sizzled the nets with 80 points in his three tourney games, contributed 20 tn the final game, tailed closely by Walt Mowery with 19, whose final game gave him 52 tourney points. - Champions Sidelined The Geneva Cardinals, county champions for the past two seasons. were sidelined in the first semi-final as the Commodores ripped their way to a 75-59 triumph, largely on the sensational scoring of Wilder, who tickled the draperies for a big 37 points. A pair of baskets by Wilder and one by Paul Ffcurote shot the commodores off to a 6-0 lead, a margin they maintained throughout the first period, in which the Cardinals trailed, 12-6. Coach Harold Schultz’ boys bounced back in the second quarter, however, and slashed Decatur’s margin to only two points 22-30. at the half. ‘ iod knotted the count at 32-22. but Jerry Voglewede and Wilder hit from the field and the Commodores were in front to stay, slowly building up their advantage to 13 points, 52-39. at the start of the final eight minutes. The Cardinals came within nine paints on a fielder and two free throws by Jerry Tester, but the Commodores again put on the pressure to win going away. Wilder 37 points easily led all

scorers, while Mowery again came through with 19. Jerry Tester, who took over the county scoring leadership in the tourney games, led bis team with 21 points, 10 in the last quarter, after having ■ tough shooting luck early in the game. Jim Long kicked in 17 points tor the fallen champions. Eagles Win Overtime Monmouth, after leading practically all the way in the second semi-final, saw the Adams Central Greyhounds rise up in the closing minutes to pull into a 53-53 tie and force the Eagles into an overtime session, the only extra period game of the tourney. The Eagles led at the first quarter, 16-10, at the half, 24-20, and at the third period, 44-38, fcefore the iG.reyhounds began to close in. The Eagles were on top, 50-44, with slightly lees than four minutes to play, but Jerry Sprunger converted four consecutive free throws to put the Greyhounds only two points badMß* as Clint Fuelling fotWd out tor Monomuth. John Rjowdort, sharp shoot ling little guard then fouled out tor-the Greyhounds, and John Myers converted one of his two chances, but Rod Beer hit from the field with two minutes to go and it was 51-50. Monmouth. Witte fouled out with 1:M to go, but Beer missed both foul attempts. Myers hit from underneath to give the Eagles their three-point lead again, but Dick Rumple potted a two-pointer for the Greyhounds on a rebound, and then converted one of two free throws to tie the score at 53-53 with only seconds left to play. Ken Baumgartner’s two charity tosses gave Adams Central a 55-53 lead in the first 15 seconds of the overtime, but Paul Fuhrman connected from the field to knot the count. The Eagles also retained possession of the Limberlost Bell, traveling trophy for the county teams, which the Eagles brought to the tourney and took back home. It will' remain In Monmouth's possession until the Eagles are defeated by another Adams county team, with the exception of sec tional play, wheJ-e no trophies are permitted. —oOo— The Decatur Commodores proved the surprise team of the tourney. Winners of only four games during the regular season, three of them in their last three starts, the Commodores knocked off favored Berne and Geneva (defending champion) in their first two games, but could not cope with Monmouth's size in ,he final tilt. —~oOo The teams will now return to the regular season games, with all pointing toward the annual sectional tourney, whiclL will be held at the Adams Central gym, opening Wednesday afternoon. Feb. 23. The Decatur Yellow Jackets, who snapped a seven-game losing streak against Elmhurst last week, will return to action UighV erm»rta|f>in|k ? - the Huntington-Vikinfs at the Decatur gym. The ‘ Vikings have dropped eight games and won three, with victories over Rochester, 61-55; Wabash, 6560, and Elwood, 63-53. Willshire, one of the powerhouses ot Ohio, holds two victories over the Pleasant Mills Spartans. —oOo—Two other games Tuesday night pit Jefferson against Adams Cen,ral at Geneva, and Hartford travels to Pennville. The champion Eagles will return to action Wed nesday night, meeting the Roll Rollers at the MonmOuth-gym. Six games are on the- JfTiday night schedule. The Yellow Jackets win travel to Auburn to meet the always tough Red Devils. Other games will also all be played out of the county, with Adams Central at Bryaiit. Pleasant Mills at Ohio City, Geneva at Poling, Jefferson at Gray and Berne at Angola. One game is carded Saturday, with Jet .erson and Geneva meeting at Geaeva in a home game for Jefferson. —oOo — Jerry Tester, veteran guard for the Geneva Cardinals, took over .he individual scoring leadership tor the county by scoring 38 points in two county tourney games, Teser also has the top average with 23.9 points per game. Jce Wilder Given Individual Award ‘ For Sportsmanship Joe Wilder, Decatur Cathaolic high school Junior, who grabbed scoring honors in the Adams county tourney with SO points, was awarded the individual sportsmanship award at the conclusion of < the final game Saturday.
