Bears Are Upset Decatur’s Commodores, unawed by their opponents’ 10-2 season record, took an early lead against the Berne Bears in the second game, and kept the pressure op those Bears all the way for their 60-49 triumph. Tom Ehrsam hit the first shot Os the game for a 2-0 Berne lead but a pair of free throws by Walt Mowery and fielders by Joe Wilder and Jerry Voglewede shot the Commodores into a 6-2 lead after three minutes of play. A field goal and a pair of foul tosses by Ben Sprunger knotted the count at 6-6 but Wilder hit two in a hurry and Mowery added another brace of free throws, and the Commodores were away winging. The Decatur lads held a 14-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but broke the game wide open in the second period, scoring 19 points to only seven for the Bears, giving the Commodores a 33-17 half-time advantage. Bernd hit only once from the field in the period. The Commodores led at the third period, 43-30. Wilder paced the Commodores with 23 points, Mowery dropping in 14. Indiana's Net Coach Assails New Foul Rule INDIANA’S NET BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (INS) — Indiana University basketball coach Branch McCracken considers just the facts of the bonus free throw rule, mam, and not how well his Hurryin’ Hoosiers are making out. Despite the fact that his quintet has come up from a slow start to ah Bft-percent accuracy at the -toee th/ow line, McCracken saM; "I think the free throw rule is terrible.” McCracken, whose boy» also set a new Big 10 free throw record Wdth 43 points, said: , . “Games have come down to a point where they’re free throw shooting contests. In several of ofir games we’ve had the opportunity of scoring more than 60 jlpints by free throws. That’s ridiculous. It has taken a lot from the game without accomplishing' Vfhat it was designed to do — reduce the number of fouls committed.” He added: "I don’t like to criticize a rule without being able to offer something I think is better, but this present system is cockeyed. Whatever we go to, I feel it should be thoroughly ~ tested ju, actual competition before it’s written into the ■rule book.” Over-officiating was one bone of contention so far as McCracken was concerned. He concluded: “There’s too much whistle blowing on petty fouls which don’t into refer with the play at all.” Klenk's Winner In Vim League Playoff Klenk’s of Decatur won its firs) start in the Vim league playoff Thursday night, defeating Monroeville, 77-68, at the Hoagland gym.
