Farmers Have Huge Feed Grain Supply Monthly Report On Crops Is Revealed WASHINGTON (INS) — The governments monthly crop report showed today that farmers entered the New Year with very large supplies of feed grains and with the poultry* flocks producing eggs at a record rate These were the highlight* of conditions on U. S. farms as of January 1. They Were coupled with a report that milk output in December ran about one percent behind the record production achieved in the same month of 1953. Here’s what the report showed: Feed grains — The supply on farms is 78 million, 200 thousand tons, compared with 76 million tons at the beginning of each ot the last two years. Current stock* for this time of year have been exceeded only four times in history, with a record of 89 million tons~in 1949. Corn—Farm stock* of somewhat more than tveo billion bushels are only elightly (three and one-halt percent) smaller than a year earlier. but they are still above average for the season. Wheat — Supplies on farms total 316 million bushels. This is onefourth less than a year ago and 15 percent below average. Altiiimth Decambex outptrt -fir.wgW' btfjion. was smaller than a year earlier, it was the second highest for the month in 31 years. Total milk production for 1954 js now Estimated at 123 billion, 800 million pounds or two percent more than the previous high in 1953. Eggs—Poultry in farm flocks laid five billion, 494 million eggs iir December, topping the comparable month for 1953 by five percent and hitting a new high for the month. For the year also, egg production was at a new peak—five percent above the previous year and 13 percent above aver-' age. Citrus — Early and midsea*on oranges are {precast at 71 million boxes—seven percent above last season. The grapefruit crop is.predicted at 44 million boxes, or a ■two-million-box decline since the Dec. 1 forecast. The California lemon crop was estimated at about 14 and one-half million boxes. This is nine percent below’ last season but 17 percent above average. The report, commenting on conditions generally, noted that farmers are up against what it called a real quandary in deciding what they will do with acres diverted from production of cotton, wheat and other crops. It said the decision lies between using these acres for grasslands, summer fallow. x>r for other soil byilding practices, or further expanding plantings of soybeans and the feed grains—oats, barley, and grain sorghums. An increase of one million acres —about orie-fourth-L-in rye plantings last fall was taken as one indication as to which way the wind is blowing. Crop reporters found that the drought situation has been eas.ed

In that new year’s eve message, the premier claimed that, while the Paris accords "increased” the danger of war, Russia was "ready to do anything" to develop lasting peaceful relations with the U.
