Commodores Win Over Anderson; Jackets Are Defeated Last Night
-YELLOW JACKETS .. The Decatur Yellow Jackets, ' playing one of their better bail games of the season,, stayed up with the taller Central Catholic ■ / Irish for three quarters but then faded in the final stanza as the Fort Wayne boys had a terrific ‘ fourth period to beat the Jackets, 7C-54. The game, played at the C. C. gym, was a see-saw affair until the Irish got hot in the last quarter. . The first period saw’ the Irish employ the Notre Dame "shock troop" system with their second team starting. The Jackets took , advantage of this to edge into a 16-14 lead. C. C. sent in their first team at the start of the second quarter, and led by Jaheway and Michael, squeezed out a 28-27 lead at halftime. The Irish widened the gap to five points in the third, but the Jackets fought right back and with Halterman and McDougal leading the way, pulled to within one point again. 42-41. Decautr grabbed a short-lived lead at the outset' Os the fourth quarter as McDougal hit a lefthanded hook to make it 43-42. From there on It was C. C.’s ball game as the Irish started to hit from everywhere and rau-away from the tiring The game was foul free as each - team made only six free throws. Dave Halterman led the local scorers with 20 points and played a splendid floor game also. Steady Freddie McDougal hit for 16 points and played his usual fine game. Gary Janeway of the Irish led all scorers with 22 points followed by Michael and Wagner with 14. The Jackets featured a revised starting line-up with Murphy and Halterman at forwards. Neireiter at center, and Kelly and McDougal playing guards. The combination played good basketball with the front line looking very aggressive. The Jackets next game will be Tuesday night against the Elmhurst Trojans at the Decatur gym. Decatur I. Spartans Edge Cardinals By Single Point The Plea?a| Mills Spartans maintained their lead in the county by downing the Geneva Cardinars’ 6s to 67 in a red-hot game Friday night at Pleasant Milla. The Spartans have now won ten and lost two, while the Cardinals have won seven and lost four. Leon Byer, of Pleasant Mills, leader in county scoring outscored Jerry Tester, who leads in average per game, 29 to 23 points. An excellent job of rebounding by Dee quarters." A capacity crowd witnessed the thrilling game,'“which saw Tester held to 13 points in the first three quarters. Four field goals and two fre throws in the final stanza rounded out his scoring. He sat on the bench most of the third quarter with four personal fouls. Byer scored the first point of the game on a free throw, but the Cardinals quickly came back, and went into the lead, 3-1. The lead see-sawed back and forth, but the Geneva five led by as much as six points just before the end of the first quarter, and again in the second quarter. The Spartans edged ahead several times, only to drop back again. The game was in doubt right down to the line, with a jump ball under the Cardinal goal with just three seconds to play. The Spartans knocked the ball out of bounds and the game ended. Half-time ceremonies saw the crowning of the Spotligh queen and king, Miss Marlene Ohler and Kent Von Gunten. The royal couple were surrounded by their court of four beautiful girls, Patty Dague, Petsy 2Bmmerman, Marlballe Wolfe, and Mary Myers. The work was done after a new brick wall replaced an old wooden one on the storage building at the rear of tht > lot. A brick chimney, complete with lightning rods, also adorns the south face of the building. The lot was the site of a restaurant in former days, but has been vacant for the last few years. - Commodores The Decatur Commodores gave Coach Dave Terveer a happy birthday Friday night as they racked up their third consecutive victory with a 68-59 triumph over the Gaels from S*. Mary’s of Anderson at the Decatur high school gym. it was a nip and tuck affair until midway through the third per* lod. when the Commodores started to pull away. •Anderson led through most of the first quarter, with the Commodores moving un into a 16-16 tje at the end of the period. A pair of field goals by little Jerry Voglewed shoved Decatur into a 20-16 lead with the opening of the second quarter and the Commodores were out in front most of the stanza, taking a slim 31-30 advantage to the dressing room at the half. 1 Anderson took the le'ad early in the third period but the Commodores went out in front at 40-39 on Joe Wilder’s fielder midway through the session and the Commodores were never headed, holding a 53-44 advantage going into the last eight minutes of play. The Anderson lads fouled repeatedly in the last IO or 12 minutes of the game, losing their enlire .starting fivg as they were wfth 28 personals in a desperate’ attempt to get back in the ball game. The Commodores made 26 of 44 free throws, the Gaels 17 of 36. Joe Wilder led all scorers with 26 points, while Jerry Voglewede tailed 16 and Walt Mowery 13. Loses Two Fingers In Replacing Slab Charles Pyle, 37, of Linn Grove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Pyle of Geneva, had two crushed finger* amputated by a Geneva doctor Friday. Eagles Defeat Union Five By 51 To 44 Score
The Monmouth Eagles, after a weak first quarter, bounced back to beat Union township of Huntington county, 51 to 44 at the Monmouth gym. Norbert Witte, high scorer for Monmouth, ranked eighth in the county arhen the week started, scored 25 points. The 6 foot, five inch center now has 199 points in 10 games for a blazing 19.9 point average, compared with his average of 14.2 a week ago. Witte was the only Monmouth scorer in double figures. Hasler, of Union township, totaled 15 points for his team, to become their high scorer of the evening. Monmouth scored 19 points to 9 for the Union five in the second quarter, and was never again in trouble. The Monroe Boosters, St. Mary’s Kekiongas. and Jefferson Work and Win clubs shared in the wards. Teeth Knocked Loose In Game Last Night Joe Wilder, center for the De catur Commodores, had two front teeth knocked loose in last night’s game with St. Mary’s of Anderson. The teeth were x-rayed this morning, but the pictures have not yet been developed. There is a possibility that they Will have to be braced. Motorist Is Fined On Traffic Charge Gerald E. Buckley, of Toledo, 0.. was fined (5 and costs tor passing at an Intersection over a yellow line one mile south of Decatur on U. S. 27 yesterday. Buckley was Arrested by the state police and tried in justice of the peace court. Po/io Sweepstakes Gets Underway In Leagues Next Week ■«. Oran Schultz, secretary of the city bowling association, announced today, following a meeting of association officials, that a Polio Sweepstakes will be conducted by leagues bowling at the Mies alleys here. Under this plan, each bowler competing will pay an additional $L with 50 cents going to the March of Dimes campaign, now underway here, and the other 50 cents going for prize money to the bowlers. None of the additional fee will go towards bowling. The sweepstakes will get underway with league bowling Monday night, and W’ill continue throughout January. The Women’s league is also considering a Polio Sweepstakes setup in its league. •<* Gorillas Lose To Montpelier Friday Night The Hartford Gorillas were defeated by the Montpelier Pacers, 70-59, at the Montpelier gym Friday night. Montpelier led at all periods, 15-10, 38-22 and 56-37. The Gorillas pulled within six points of the Pacers late in the game but could not overcome their deficit. Warriors Win Over Woodbum Friday Night The Jefferson Warriors chalked up another victory Friday night, defeating Woodburp of Allen, county, 46-4*2, at the Geneva gym. W. Lobenstein Quits Railroading Conductor Retires After Fifty Years After 50 years and more than 3,000,000 miles of railroading. E. W. Lobenstein, Grand Rapids, Mich., veteran Pennsylvania railroader and formerly of Adams county, has retired from the service. “Jingles" as he is known all the way from Grand Rapids to Richmond, put his blue conductor’s suit in a mothball bag December 24, last run of passenger service from Grand Rapids to Richmond. The veteran railroader completed his final run at Richmond and made the long ride back to his home in Michigan by bus. He often visited in Decatur and Monroe with his brothers, Otho Lobenetein and Walter Lobenstein; and with a sister, Mrs. Bertha Hendricks. “Jingles" started on passenger runs in March of 1904 and has been with the same company making the same runs since that ttme. He was temporarily sidelined in 1951 when he was injured-in a train wreck near Sturgis, Mich., but after a few months of rest he was back on the job. Lobenstein decided to retire when the Pennsylvania railroad announced discontinuance of passenger service between Richmond and Grand Rapids. He has promised his Monroe relatives that he and his wife. Gertrude Kimball Lobenstein, will make a long promised visit to this county some time soon. Guilty On Charge Os Public Intoxication R. W. tthraluka, Decatur, was found guilty this morning in Fort Wayne city court on a charge of public intoxication. The case was continued indefinitely, according to Fort Wayne police records.
