Leverett Saltonstall (R Mass.), amid recurrent reports — which he denied Friday — that he and Adams will resign soon. The report itself was a remarkably detailed account of how army “channels” that there were many slips in procedures along the way. The chonology showed that almost one year elapsed between the initiation of an investigation of Peress on Feb. 5, 1953 — one month after he began active duty — and the date of his discharge on Feb. 2 1954. Weible, who has scarcely figured in the case up to the present time, was one of 62 army personnel named officially for the first time as connected in some- way with Peress* investigation, promotion or discharge. Although Weible and Adams — a leading figure in the army-Mc-Carthy hearings — were listed in the report as the key individuals, deputy defense secretary Fred Seaton told newsmen that Weible was responsible for the actual decision. congress, explained why the names were being made public. He said he referred to a “list of individuals” in a letter to Sen. Karl E. Mundt (R S. D), chairman of the army-McCarthy probe, on June 23, 1954. Stevens said he asked that the names be withheld "because, while there was evidence of administrative errors, there was no evidence of culpability or subvrsion.” He emphasized that his request had been “respected," but he added that “since this handling of those names- has been misinterpreted in some places,” he decided to release the chronology. TRAGEDY AGAIN (Continued from rage One) her right temple. Despite the new tragedy in the family, the legal battle to upset Sam's conviction continued. His chief defense attorney, William Corrigan, withdrew a motion for a new trial late Friday, then asked the Cuyahoga county court of appeals to review the case and free Dr. Sam on bail in the meantime. A hearing on the bail motion and a request that the stay of Dr. Sheppard's life sentence be extended has been set for Jan. 17. County Rural Youth Given Gold Award Group Honored For Balanced Program Earl Yoder, 1954 president of the Adams county rural youth, accepted a gold award from WLB—- — Farmer for Its balanced program in education, recreation, and community service at the state rural youth day banquet at Purdue Thursday. Thia is Adams county’s second cdnsecutivp gold award; in other years they have won a silver and two bronze awards. The county was one of a dozen Indiana counties to be so honored. The award was made on the basis of former secretary Sally McCullough’s report. Adams county aiso received honorable mention as fourth in the membership drive contest, placing behind St. Joseph, Marion, and Tippecanoe counties. More than a dozen county members were present to receive the recognition. A speech by Warren Newberry, national director of Farm Bureau young people, entitled “You”, impressed many of those present with their duties to themselves, their community, and to their own religion. A panel of former IFYB students discussed problems of farm youths around the world. Each member attended a separate symposium on problems of rural youth. Several members of the local group who are students at Purdue university also attended the affair, including Barbara Wolfe, Don Walters, and Bill Kipfer. 7 ■ ' Trade in a Good Town. — Decatur If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, tiy a Democrat Want Ad.
