More Farmers Under Insurance Program Old Age Benefits Effective Jan. 1 o LAFAYETTE. Ind. (INS) — Purdue University today estimated that 3.6 million self-employed farm operators and 2.1 million additional hired farm workers will lie brought automatically under the old age and survivors’ insurance program on Jah. 1. A. M. Nichter, Purdue agricultural economist, in a Purdue publication entitled “Economic and Marlgbting Information,” wrote that, participation in the program is mandatory for all farm operators whose annual net income from self-employment is S4OO or more and for farm workers who earn SIOO or more cash per year from one employer, until the age of 65. Monthly benefit payments will be made to the eligible insured persons when he retires and to his wife when she reaches 65. In the event of death of an insured person, the widow and any dependent children under 18 will receive monthly survivor benefit payThe cost of the programs, like the benefits, varies and is (determined by a three percent tax upon the yearly net income from 1400 to $4,200 of the farm operator, beginning with the 1955 net income. This rate will, remain at three per cent until 1960 and Increase every five years until it reaches a six percent tax l?y 1975. The tax on the farm worker’s wages is four percent, split evenly by the employee and the employer. In 1969, the rate for each will be. two and one-half percent. This rate will increase every five years until 1975 w’hen it will be four percent for the worker and four percent for the employer. The employer is responsible for collecting and reporting the wages of workers to whom he pays SIOO of more cash in a year. U. S. EXPRESSES (Continued from rage One) and both the tone and language used seemed to bear evidence they had agreed on. what to say. Each talked bf further ratification procedures “in France and elsewhere.” The language Was qiifte similar when the President talked' of a future cooperation which would supplant “age-oTa antagonisms,” and' Dulles praised the French fpr “the burying of age-old hostilities.” Dulles appajently tried to make bis statement a tribute to the French while still retaining an.attitude of caution. He said: “The vote indicates that of a ll t h ® parties only the Communist bloc of abollt 100 deputies voted mechanically against all constructive measures. In the other parties there were differences, but they were differences of opinion as how best to achieve western European.unity under conditions which'” Would” assure increased strength to protect national and individual freedom.’ Mr. Elsenhower and the secretary made it clear they understood that the vote by the French national assembly was one of the head rather than the heart.
