Fingerprinting Os Cells Is Described Means Os Probing • Cancer Mysteries BERKELEY, Calif. (INS) —The "fingerprinting” of living cells as a dramatic means of probing deeper into the mysteries of cancer was described by a scientist today at the 121st meeting of the American association for the advancement of science. The report was delivered as the huge AAAS convention, attended by some 6,000 delegates, swung into high gear on the University of California's Berkeley campus, with humorous sessions on topics ranging from snakebite deaths to radioactivity in oil ‘refining.’ Dr. Eugene Roberts, chief research biochemist of the City of Hope medical center- in Southern California, toll a symposium" on the physiology of growth that cancer is “a chemical law unto itself.” Where malignant growths occur in the body, he explained, Certain similarities can be found in their biochemical makeup in sharp contrast to normal tissues, all of which have highly Individual pattems las chemteal -acHvity. One of the similarities.'in tumors. Roberts reported, is in their patterns of free amino acids, substances which act as "building blocks” of protein and also perform other important functions in living cells. Roberts told the scientific gathering of his explorations during the last eight years into the nature of amino acids in normal and cancerous tissues. 1— He said he and his associates use a method known as paper chromatography by which cells are virtually "fingerprinted” for comparatively rapid identification of biochemical materials. The research expert reported some results of preliminary teats on animal tumors. ed, however: "No core for cancer la envisioned at present but our experiments furnish further tools for probing into the intricacies of neoplastic cancerous growth.” > woman can bear up under any thing when she wears a new hat —JU.
