Detroit Lions And Browns To Battle Sunday CLEVELAND (INS) — Cleveland quarterback Otto Graham, author of many records In professional football, gets a chance to harness one of the biggest ories of all Sunday when he directs his Browns against the Detroit Lions for the National Football League title. Graham, who has led the Clevelanders to nine straight division championships and says he will retire after this season, will be shooting for the great Sammy Baugh’s record of 22,085 yards gained passing. The curly-haired Cleveland pasqer Is just 222 yards short of that mark, and normally 222 yards would not be an unusual performance for Otto on most given Sunday afternoons. But against the Lions-the only professional team coach Paul Brown has not mastered in his brilliant career — there is ’some doubt. The Bengals, who are shooting for an „unprecedented third straight world title, apparently have the “whammy” on Craham, as well as the Browns. In winning four straight from the Cleveland club —two in title play the past two "seasons and two in regular season encounters—the Lions have held Graham in check more consistently than any other club. In last December’s championship battle at Briggs stadium in the Motor City, Otto heaved 16 passes, completed only three for a total gain of nine yards —a tribute to the Detroit pass defense. The two clubs met again last week at Cleveland stadium in a postponed regular season game and once again Graham was held in check. Because of an almost blinding snow, Graham attempted only six passes, but more Impressive—or unimpressive—is the fact that he completed only one for a net gain of four yards. Two other meetings between the (wo arch rivals found Graham throwing at will, but he fell far short of the 200-yard mark in both contests, which were won by, Detroit. Coach Buddy Parker of the Bengals has no special formula for stopping the .Cleveland quarterback, but whatever it is, apparently the other NFL clubs are completely in the dark. During the regular 1954 season, Graham finished second in passing with an 8.72 yards per try average, but he was far and aw’ay the top man in percentage, completing nearly *6O percent ol his passes. Against the Lions, however, his completion figure has been far below that mark, and he has never thrown a tou/hdown pass against the defending National League kings. As a matter of fact, the Browns have never scored more than one touchdown in any of the last four games with the Lions. Cdaich Paul Brown is running his charges through drills on - the froxen field at league park this week, hoping that two of his backfield aces—fullback Maurice Bassett and halfh'ack Billy Reynolds—will be in shape for Sunday's encounter. Bassett has an injured thigh, while Reynolds is the victim of an ailing foot and their absence in the “blue chips’’ game could seriously damage the Browns’ already sagging ground game, especially if- the weather is not conductive to good passing.
