Kentucky Five Back On Top Os College Teams * NEW YORK (INS) — Adolph! Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats are starring in a familiar role today—the nation’s No. 1 college basketball team. The Wildcats, seemingly perpetual occupants of upper hoop society, took over top spot in International News Service’s nationwide rankings, and LaSalle, previous first placer, plunged to fifth slot. The national picture was altered again last week by the unexpected, and more may be on tap this week.* Featured prominently in the upheaval story was Utah. The Redskins, winning their seventh in a row, belted LaSalle from the ranks of the unbeaten, 79 to 69, Saturday night. The Explorers, last season’s NCAA champions, had a winning streak of 15 straight, snapped. The unbeaten Utes, using the LaSalle upset to springboard into fourth place in tb .N 8 poll, did so by limiting all-America Tom Gola to a two-point second half 'after the sensational Explorer vrhiz had collected 1? points in the first 20 minutes. Several Top Flight Teams Now In State INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — At the halfway turn of the Indiana high school basketball regular season race, there appear to be at least a dozen top flight contend- 1 ere for the state title. Although the week's playing Is mdptly this side of Christmas vacatwn and is comparatively light, most of the big timers will take a final pre-Yule plunge. The biggest glutton for punishment is Coach Howard Sharpe, whose Terre Haute Gerstmeyer Blackcats ain’t near so powerful as |bey were when this schedule was made. Ready or not they shall be caught, however, as the schedule has them down to scatch against two .of the toughest clubs in the state—Muncie Central and Michigan City, both running 7-0 streaks. Gerstmeyer, having a down year with only Uncle Harold Andrews Os the three Dandy Andies Sharpe once had, has won its last three but almost certainly won’t get by its Tuesday date at Muncie or managing that gargantuan task notby its Thursday date with M.C. Two other top winners, Indianapolis Criapus Attacks, 8-0, and Fort Wayne Central, 6-i and winning' by an average of 15 points, take time out from play this week to Test up for post-Christmas Tourneys. New Albany also has a 6-0 ornament to hang on the trek. The Bandogs, whose football brethren also dominated the southland this year are idle until the Lafayette firing opens. Jasper, whose Wildcats are anxious to get to the Bulldogs at Lafayette, entertain Paoli, Tuesday, in a game that could be as sneaky as that Huntingburg trap. Paoli dumped Jeffersonville at the beginning of the year. Jeff, which has recaptured some glory and lost since the Pabll misfortune, will play Tuesday at Shelbyville, another team not destined at this moment for anything very great. Two teams (to get away from the all-winning) not destined to get very far off the ground this yekr batfle it out Tuesday when Bloomington travels down Ind. 37 to Bedford.
