Stiffer Narcotics Law To Be Sought \ Governor To Seek Assembly Action INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — IndiAsia Governor George N. Craig announced today he would seek, the death penalty for persons who sell heroin to minors. The governor said he would ask the Indiana general assembly to tix that death sentence and to prescribe higher other sales of dope. Sentences proposed Snare 10 years for the first offense of possession or sale of drugs and 20 years for the second offense. The general assembly will start a twomonths session on Jan. 6. Governor Craig said to report‘•rt: 777 "If anyone should kill one of our children by giving him a dose of arsenic, you would feet he deserved capital punishment. But anyone who gives a dose of heroin to a minor condemns him to death because there is no cure for the heroin habit It is a slow, lingering death, preceded usually by crime and misery.” The governor said he is determined to fight the dope traffic because Indiana has become a transportation center for drugs for the nation because of Us email penalties. He added, however, that not many Hoosiers are narcotics addicts. Existing Indiana penalties for narcotics law viooltors are: First offense, two to five years and a SI,OOO fine; second offense, five to 10 years and a $5,000 fine, three or more offenses. 10 to 20 years and a SIO,OOO fine. Governor Craig said: “I am determined to make Indiana the most unhealthy state in the nation for dope traffickers. 1 shall double the number of state policemen assigned to narcotics squads and smash this terrible traffic in human misdry. “The person who gives heroin to a minor is much worse than the person the law now calls a mur derer. Many murders are committed in the heat of passion without premeditation, but the man who gives heroin to a child is doing a cold-blooded, premeditated act and should be killed.”
