New York — The wards of the song "Annie Laurie" were first printed in 1824 but were not set to music until 1835.

Roll Out Carpet For Passengers Rolled Out Daily For Crack Train NEW YORK (INS) — Every evening one hour before the crack Twentieth Century limited pulls out of Grand Central Station for its overnight run to Chicago, eight workers roll out a halMon carpet for the passengers to walk along before boarding the train. During the next 60 minutes some 400 passengers and porters — some of them for a train that leaves on an adjoining track — use the carpet. When the Century pulls out, the carpet is rolled up and stored until the next evening. . Probably no carpet is more famous or receives harder use than this 260-foot red strip that has been a part of the departure ceremonies of the train since 1922. The average life of a Century red carpet, according to the Nfew York Central railroad, is eight years. During those eight years, they estimate, some 1,168.000 people use the carpet. This is more usage than a carpet in a living room in an average home would receive in 30 years And, while the red carpet is custom-made, manufacturers say its longevity is not unusual. Ail soft floor coverings of good quality last for many, many years, under the hardest use, they say. And, when the carpet is “retired," it is not because of wear. Damage from cigarette bui;ns usually forces the railroad to buy a new carpet after eight years. After the carpet is retired, unburned sections are used to cover the floors of executives of the railroad. Some of these offices still have Door coverings made from the original red carpet which was first spread to give a royal welcome to Century passengers back in 1922, 32 years ago. . -Tokyo are the principal source of animal protein for the Japanese people and provide an estimated 85 percent of their total supply of that variety of essential food products.

Cupid Scores VIENNA (INS) — Dan Cupid 1 has been given a new shot In the arm by U, S. military authorities in Austria. Love-struck Gl’s, the army announced, will now be able to marry their frauleins eight months after arriving in the command. Previous *rmy rules prohibited marriage until three months before departure. Ruffled Safety PHOENIX, Ariz., (INS) — “Ruffles” are helping to prevent traffic accidents near Phoenix. The American Public W’orks Association reports that three sets of "ruffles” have been placed in the macadam surface near a dead end on a road to Luke Air Force Base. These rib-like rises jolt the driver . into watchfulness near an intersection where some drivers have smashed through a fence and ended up in an irrigation canal. Christmas Tree Legend Recalled KENT, 0., (INS) — No tree Is more closely associated with Christmas than the fir. It was the first Christmas tree and still presides over the Yuletide season today, with ornamented boughs and presents beneath them. One of the oldest Christmas tree legends, according to arboreal historians of the Davey Tree Expert Co., concerns the fir and St. Winfred, who introduced Christianity to the Druids. He called It the tree of endless life, adding: "Its leaves shall be ever green and it shall be called the tree of the Christ Child to remind you of His kindliness and good deeds to all mankind.”
