Indians Took « Team Pitching Title In '54 NEW YORK (INS) —The “miracle” Giants of ‘54 took the world series In tour straight from the greatest pitching team in American League history. Official statistics released today show that the Cleveland Indians won the team pitching title for 1954 with an earned-run-average of 2.78 —lowest in the league’s 54-year history. -z Closest anybody else came was Chicago, with a 3.05 ERA mark, Last year's leader. New York’s Yankees, finished third with 3.25. . Tribe pitchers, paced by the league’s individual pitching champ, Mike Garcia, also established a new league record with fewest runs allowed in a season. The liuMuns’ 504 runs permitted lowered the old mark of 507 set by the Yankees in . im __— Garcia captured the earned-run title with a 2.64 aveiage for the tegular season. The 19-game winner was the sixth member of the Trbie mound corps to finish on top at season's end. Early Wynn was the last in 1950. Garcia also tied with Chicago's Virgil Trucks for the most shutouts at five apiece. Sandy Consuegra of the White Sox led the league in percentage of games won with 16 victories and only three defeats. Wynn tied with teammate Bob Lemon with most winp, 28, and he also hurled the most innings (271), started the most games (36) and faced the most batsmen (1,001). . - Yankee rookie Bob Grim was the only qther 20-game winner as compared to four in 1953. Grim had an even 20 with only six losses. But the odds apparently were having no effect on the advance ticket sale which promoter Benny Ford said continues “above expectations.” Olson and the French challenger wound up training with their handlers satisfied each is in top shape for the 15-round title go that will be televised nationally. Most of Olson's adherents take the view that the sharply-tuned champion wil wear Langlois down and belt him out of the fight in the 11th or 12th round. But Langlois’ backers insist their man is going the distance and many contend he will achieve his ambition to take the crown back to France where it was held briefly by the late Marcel Cerdan. Jean Bretonne, Langlois’ manager, pointed out that Olson has never scored a knockout in any of “bis 15 round tights. Bretonne added: “Pierre's as good and maybe better than those who fought Bobo for the full 15 rounds.”

The host junior high teem walloped Bluffton. 53-20, leading at al! periods, 20-4, 28-8 and 40-12. Egly tallied 12 points tor Adams Central and Collins counted seven tor Bluffton.
