The suggestion cf a Laborite appeal to Peiping originated in the lew.-paper Sunday Dispatch and was echoed editorially today In the pro-Laborite London Daily Mirror which described it as "a splendid .dea." CRAIGDENIES from Page One) enbower had shown weakness toward the Chinese Communists, had been “unwarranted and unfair." Gov. Craig said the attack “gave a lot of people a better insight to what is going on in McCarthy’s mind.” He added that in his opinion, the Wisconsin junior senator is "becoming progressively Ineffective” after having earlier “rendered the American people a great service in exposing Communists ip government." Gov. Craig said that he had seen ho indication of a third party in the making but added that his Washington trip did not place him in a position for much political consultation since he was primarily concerned with the defense department. *- He said he was acting as a "private citizen" in his consultations with the defense officials on a proposed plan to provide 1,000 hours of military training for all able-bodied males after they pass their eighteenth birthday. The plan would use national guard and ROTC officers to augment regular defense officers in giving the training and hold down the cost to $1042. About developments within the state, Gov. Craig commented: He still is opposed to an increase in gasoline tax. even though the legislative advisory commission voted in favor of one Tuesday. He said he would veto such a bill if It came to his desk on the basis that advancement of toll road con struction would make sufficient money available for work on state highways without resorting to a tax increase. Opined that Indiana would be able to match available federal funds for highway construction without increased taxes if the general assembly would authorize a monthly distribution of gas taxes instead of quarterly. Gov. Craig also said he is in favor of having the toll roads policed by Indiana troopers, declaring "We can’t have two police forces." Want Ad. k brings results. Checking Story Os Witness To Murder Claims Witnessing Alabama Slaying PHENIX CITY. Ala. (LNS) —lnvestigators were checking today into the story of a man who claims he was witness to the June 18 slaying of Alabama attorney general-elegt Albert L. Patterson in Phenix, chy. The witness' claim, which came to light as a Rusnell county grand jury neared completion ot its long probe into the slaying of the anticrime crusader, was not commented upon by top crime investigators. Sources close to the probe were’ skeptical that the story of the Unideniifield witness could be verified. One said: "I would not be irfblined to put much stock in the story." The alleged witness to the slaying was picked up by Columbus. Ga., police on a drunk charge and told officers he saw the gangland shooting of Patterson. Only last week, a grand jury witness believed to have been present when Patterson was slain, was fatally stabbed in an altercation with a 16-year-old Negro boy. Authorities said the incident was not connected with the murder probe. Revelation that another witness might exist came as the grand jury pi epared to hear testimony from the one-time gambling czar of Phen.x City, Hcyt Shephard. He and his business associate. Jimmy Mathews, have been serving 90-day jail sentences after pleading guilty to a charge of unlanowivz’y leasing property for gambling purposes. FARM BUREAU (Continued from ’’age One) L. He said a political party, in his view, should be moderate in Its attitude toward the functions of government but progressive toward those things which are needed by the people. Mr. Eisenhower said it remains to be seen, whether the job of advancing his program will be more difficult as a result of the Republican split over censuring McCarthy. He declared emphatically, when the first McCarthy question was fired at him, that he stands for positive things and is going to continue to stand for them. The President said he has alwwyr Wera" UTe" righ t "of congrßis to make investigations but he pointed out that there is a difference between this investigating right and -the issues involved in the McCarthy case.
UN Assembly Ordered Into Night Session Special Session On Thursday Night To Act On Prisoners UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. (INS) —The UN assembly was ordered today into special night session Thursday to assure fast action demanded by the U. S. and its Koreal allies to win the release of American and other UN personnel held prisoner by Red China. U. S. Ambassadar Henry Cabot Lodge has made it clear to UN secretary general Dag Hammarskjold—and is vigorously impressing upon other UN delegates —the U. S. viewpoint that the prestige of the global organization is at stake. i Hammarskjold has been designated to carry out the "mission to Peiping” by the allies on the grounds that detention of the American and other UN prisoners in violation of the armistice makes UN the chief victim of attack by. the Chinese Communists. Pressure already is growing for Hammarskjold to fly personally to Peiping to intervene with Mao-Tse-Tung and Chou En-Lai. Lodge and vigorous supporters, among the allies are driving for a final vote by Thursday night on the 16-nation resolution condemning the truce violation. Lodge predicted an overwhelming majority for the resolution, but a stiff battle was expected to begin in the assembly this afternoon on jlhe agenda question. Soviet delegate Jacob Malik is directing strategy of the Communist bloc in UN to delay the assembly's acceptance of the U. S. complaint against Red China. A stormy and filibustering afternoon session 18 anticipated. Suggests 6th Fleet Relieved Os Duties Would Remove Fleet From Mediterranean WASHINGTON (INS) — A top navy official suggested today that the U. S. sixth fleet should be relieved of duty in the Mediterranean sea to play a greater role in defense against atomic attacks. i A®iistant rjavy secretary for air JanfitfW. Smith sAb naval forces on the high seas could do much to divert atomic or hydrogen attacks from land, targets, but that this value is reduced if they are confined to "narrow" waters. The U. S. sixth fleet has been on patrol in the Mediterranean since 1948. The fleet consists of two large aircraft carriers, three cruisers, 16 destroyers, more than 200 warplanes and about 20.000 men, including a battalion of marines. Smith, taking Issue for the second time this week with the military philosophy of British field marshal Sir Bernard said in a statement that ery has suggested that navies in narrow seas do not need an air arm of their own. " Smith argued: "yet the North Atlantic treaty organization of which Montgomery is deputy supreme commander presents a requirement for the sixth fleet, with its heavy air attack capability, to remain in the Mediterranean.” The naval air chief said in his Opinion "narrow sgas should not heed naval striking forces” and "I only regret that there are not air forces in Europe that could control the Mediterranean and the air above.”
