Senator McCarthy Taking Rest Cure Senator Disappears From Public View WASHINGTON (INS) — Aw> elates of Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy said today he is on a "rest cure" tor several weeks at a vacation site undisclosed even to his inner circle of companions. The Wisconsin Republican disappeared from public view Tuesday after stirring up a new controversy by leveling a stinging personal blast at President Eisenhower. He left while his investigations subcommittee was in the midst of -hearings on Communist infiltration of defense plants in eastern Pennsylvania. He-Said his sore right arm was giving him too much trouble to remain. Where be went is anybody’s guess, and a secret which his friends and suit are keeping to themselves —if they know. After he left Tuesday, his office would say only that he had “gone out of town and will be away for a week or 10 days." His aides professed not to know his whereabouts. McCarthy's subcommittee resumed public hearings, meanwhile. with some six witnesses scheduled to testify this morning. Tuesday. Sen. Karl E. Mundt (R-S. D.) presided and asked the Bethlehem Steel Co. to fire two of its mill workers who refused to answer questions about Communism on grounds of possible selfincrimination. The company responded almost immediately by suspending t h e pair—Joseph A. Picucci, 55, of Bethlehem, Pa., and John Szabo, 41, of Butztown, Pa. Mundt told reporters several of today's witnesses would .be employes of the same company. He described the hearings as "sort of a trial heat mechanism which we hope will expedite some formula which will get rid of these fellows” as far as their employment. in defense plants is concerned. Mundt said Sen. Charles E. Potter (R-Mich.) would preside at today s session, and that the hearings probably woul4 conclude this week. Mundt said he himself is returning to South Dakota.
