Indiana Upset By Missouri, lowa Winner CHICAGO (INS) — Big Ten champion Indiana licked its wounds today following Missouri's 64 to 61 upset victory—the fir*t basketball defeat the Hoosiers have suffered at home since February, 1952, when St. John's accomplished the same deed. The Tigers, trailing by five points with 10 minutes left in the game Monday night, dumped in 10 consecutive points to take a four point lead and nurse it to the upset. Don Schlundt scored 25 points for the Hoosierk, but sat out the final 10 minutes of the game while Indiana tried to halt the Tiger

Meanwhile, lowa’s Hawkeyes crushed Nebraska, 84 to 61, for their third straight non-conference victory and appeared to be a good bet to give Indiana a difficult time when the Big Ten season begins. Wisconsin had little trouble disposing of Western Michigan, 80 to 68. Dick Cable scored 25 points for tjie Badgers. Marquette zoomed past Creighton, 96 to 68; Kansas toppled Louisiana State, 83 to 58; Loyola of Chicago erased North Dakota State, 90 to 75, and Detroit took Bowling Green, 91 to 60. Johnny Michelosen To Coach Pittsburgh PITTSBURGH (INS) — The appointment of assistant coach Johnny Michelosen as head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh represents a calculated gamble for athletic director Tom Hamilton, a man who generally has both eyes on the box office. Many football followers believe Hamilton made a wise choice and may have landed one of the best college mentors in the land. But a number of others can’t get out of their minds Michelosen’s failure while guiding the Pittsburgh Steelers for five years. His stubborn refusal to junk the single wing offense caused a depression in the gate receipts and forced his resignation. Apparently Hamilton is gambling that Michelosen will have a winning season and woo back the handful’of patrons who may drop the Panthers early next season because of their return to conservative, . wing football. And maybe • HamUto® hae- assurance that Michelosen will install a multiple offense — single wing. T, spMt-T and buck lateral series. — The Pitts haven't had too much success with the T mentors in the past. Red Dawson who quit last month had the best record, winning six and losing three in 1952— his first season. Possibly Michelosen won the .Pitt job for himself with some valuable scouting he did of Northwestern. He found out that the Wildcats liked to drop the left side of their line and secondary back as soon as the opposing center flipped the ball in punt formation, to get the maximum on punt returns. Pitt gambled and ran to the right on fourth down with eight to go tor a first down late in the game, made the sticks by eight yards and went on to win. Another factor which apparently endeared him with Hamilton, was his privately-expressed belief that Pitt had better material than ' its won-lost record showed.
