The new coverage voted by the Republican - controlled 83rd congress takes effect Jan. 1 and informed opinion in Washington fs that the upcoming Democratic congress will make little or no change in it. “ Actually, no payments of the new social security tax on farmers will be due until 1956 but those who will be covered are advised to apply for their social security cards now and to begin keeping the necessary records. About the only persons not covered are farm owners who have someone else wording their lands on a lease or rental basis. Any farmer who is self-employ-ed must pay a three percent tax on his earnings up to 34,200 a year. Those who become eligible for coverage on Jan. 1 will be considered insured after they have worked under the system for 18 months. When an operator dies, or retires after reaching age 65, payments are made from social security funds to his Survivors, his dependents or to himself. Persons doing farm work for others, in other words hired workers, have been covered by the law for nearly three years. But they now get old age and survivors insurance protection if they earn as much as 3100 cash wages a year from any one farmer. The social security tax contribution for farm workers is two percent each on the employe and the employer and the maximum income on which it must be paid is again 34,200. In general, a farm workef or operator earning about 3200 a month will receive about >7B a month when he retires at 65. If his wife is also 65 or over at his retirement they will get about 3118 a month. Democrat Want Ads Bring Results If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad.
