More Girls Winning Livestock Prizes More Young People Taking Down Prizes CHICAGO (INS) — More and more young people are hauling down the big prizes in the livestock show Industry, and more and more of these' triumphant youngsters are girls. This strange turn of events was brought to public attention this week at the international livestock exposition “In Chicago when two teenage lowa girls won the coveted prizes—the grand championship and the reserve grand championship for steers. However, the same trend has been noticeable, if not noted, in county and state fairs throughout the nation in recent years. What is the reason tor it? An International News Servcie poll of exhibitors and officials at the exposition today gave this conclusion: The girls simply have the best animals. Many contributing factors were offered, most of them running along these lines: 1. Yotyjg people have more time to devote to the care and feeding of animals, and girls, in turn, have more time than boys, who often are occupied by other farm chores. 2. Girls are better showmen, which gives them extra points. 3. Girls get a lot of help that men and boys do not. 4. Girls are given the best animals to exhibit because their fathers or sponsors think they will make a better impression on the judges. Barbara Clausen, 15, of Spencer, la., whose shorthorn steer. Salty, woh the reserve grand championship, said “it is all in the animal.” She added: “Boys can raise steers Just as good as girls, but you've got to have a good calf to start with and I guess that's where the girls have been lucky.” Ardyce Haring, 17, of Frankline, Neb., whose steer won the junior Hereford championship, differed a bit with Barbara, saying: "You can’t buy the champion and you can’t raise it." She explained it must be a combination of a good calf to start with, and good feeding and care after that. She also said she thinks girls “give better care’’ to the steers than boys because they “look after them while the boys are off playing basketball or somettang.” A 40 year-old Waukesha. Wls., herder, Pete Adams, who has spent all his life in the cat tie busiWBSS, believes the girls are given “all the breaks" in selection of a calf, in the time they can devote to It and in outside assistance. “But,” he added, “1 think it's just fine that they win.” ’* This view was echoed by Eugene Clevinger, 19, of Morocco. ' Ind., who said “girls have the advantage. but it’s O.K. with me." Harry T. Ryan Chicago, a judge in the hay and grain show, said he thinks a lot of the girls are given prize animals to show because "they might make a better impression on the judges." But he emphasized, the officials are not swayed, and added: "They (the judges) look for the quality of the animal and the uklfi of the exhibitor. Whether the exhibitor is a pretty young girl or abearded old man makes no ditference in their selections.” .MAJOR OVERHAUL (Continued from Page One> ney available for immediate use, the Clay committee is considering floating bonds which would be retired from gasoline taxes and other revenue used for road purposes.
