Yellow Jackets Defeat Bluffton; Commodores Defeated At Hoagland
YELLOW JACKETS Decatur'a Yellow Jackets spoiled the Bluffton Tigers’ first game in thtir beautiful new gym Tuesday night, the Jackets eking out a 38-37 victory over their old rivals in a nip and tuck battle. With Bluffton leading, 37-36, and only eight seconds of the ga meleft to play, the Tigers were playing keep away near center court Dave Halterman knocked down a Bluffton pass, grabbed the ball and dribbled all the way under for an easy layup and the onepoint victory. Bluffton got the ball out of bounds after Halterman’s fielder, but threw the ball out of bounds and the game ended before Decatur could put the ball in play. It was a close contest all the way. While both teams were playing a pretty fair ball game for this early in the season, neither could hit, accounting for the low score despite an average amount of shooting attempts. Bluffton took an early 6-2 lead but three baskets by Fred McDougal pulled the Jackets into an 8-8 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets moved Into a 19-14 advantage at the half, but the Tigers spurted late in the third period to come within one point at 27-26 as the game entered the final eight minutes. The lead changed hands eight times in that final quarter, with a 35-32 Decatur lead with three minutes to play the greatest margin either team enjoyed. Don Lockwood broke a 35-35 tie with two minutes to play, Halterman cut it to one point with a free throw, and then pulled hit game winning play with just eight seconds to go. Fred McDougal, veteran Jacket guard, led all the scorers with 18 points of his team’s 38. No other player w-as in double figures, Dick Vptgraft topping Bluffton with eight, The Jackets made only eight of 24 free throws. Bluffton seven of 14. Pleasant Mills Scores Win At Adams Central The Pleasant Mills Spartans defeated the Adams Central Greyhounds Tuesday night, 64-57, with Leon Byer scoring 24 points for the winners. The game was played at Adams Central. The game got off to a slow start, with three minutes elapsing before the first field goal was made. Pleasant Mills led in the early part of the. first quarter, but before the quarter ended Adams Central surged ahead, and led 19-14 at the quarter. The Pleasant Mills team continued cold through the second quarter, scoring 14 points, but holding the Greyhounds to only 12 points* After the half, the Spartans caught fire ind scored 22 points, holding Adams Central to only 10. Pleasant Mills led, 50-41, at the three-quarters nfark. Mitchel was top scorer for the Greyhounds, making three field goals and 10 free throws for a total of 16. Pleasant Mills will entertain Jefferson Dec. 3, and Adams Central will be host to Inncaster Central the same night. COMMODORES Fighting hard to cut down a slim foiinth quarter Hoagland lead, Decatur Oatholic Commodores were unable to do >lt and Idst Tuesday night’s game at Hoagland, 56 to 52. The game, a close one all the way, went into th4 final minute with Hoagland leading by a onepoint margin. The Decatur boys lost possession of the ball after a vain attempt at a field goal. In the degperate pressing to regain possession during the final seconds, Mowery fouled Hoagland's Beerman, who ea.ik two free throws to give the Wildcats the game. Coach Dave Terveer's quintet led 16 to 10 at the end of the first quarter and 27 to 24 at the half. Superiority at the foul line kept them’in the lead.durtng the first half, when they connected on 10 field goals while Hoagland made 11. Coach Paul Harwood’s Wildcats finally pulled ahead in the third quarter when they sank seven field goals and one charity toss to Decatur Catholic’s four field goals and three free throws, making the third quarter score, 39 to >B, in favor of the home team. The last quarter was a.see-saw session but Hoagland again outscored the Commodores from the field and totalled 16 points to the local boys' 14 and won the game by three points. Walt Mowery, with seven field goals and six free throws, led the Commodores scoring with a total of 20 points. Ronnie Meyer with 13 points and Joe Wilder with 11 also helped the Commodore cause. Scoring was evenly divided among Ithe Hoagland team with John Schlennner wracking up 16 points and his team-mate, Beerman, scoring 15. ■ - , . - The Commodores will meet Chester Center at Bluffton Wednesday, Dec. 1. Gorillas Lose To Bryant By 53-42 Score A bad third quarter cost the Hartford Gorillas a chance to register their first victory of the season Tuesday, instead dropping their fourth straight, 53-42, to the' tough Bryant Owls at Bryant. Hartford led at the first quarter, 18-11, and at the half, 28-24, but fell behind at the third period, 45-32. ... ■ .. Clark Stahly led Hartford with 15 points, and Miller was high for Bryant with 14. Simon, big Bryant center and top scorer, was limited to nine points.
